Carrying the Torch of Black Girl Magic | Mango Lindo

Guitar Girl Magazine’s Diversity Editor, Gabriella “Guitar Gabby” Logan, sat down with some of her industry sisters to celebrate the cultural influence of Black history in music. This series highlights the amazing womxn that continue carrying the torch while using their platforms and music to spread positivity in a changing world.

What is your name and pronouns, where are you from, and what instrument do you play?

My name is Mango Lindo (she/her); I’m from Los Angeles, CA, and I play the guitar.

What does it mean to be a Black womxn in this world?

To be a Black womxn is to be the embodiment of perfection. We’re creative, innovative, beautiful, loving, inspiring, and more. Our beauty is admired and imitated the world over. There’s no limit to a Black womxn’s greatness.

What does Black history mean to you? And why do you think it’s necessary to celebrate?

Black history IS history. Far too often, the many achievements of Black people are overlooked and unappreciated, and I feel that Black history month serves as a reminder to let the world never forget all of the things that we’ve accomplished, the hurdles that we’ve had to overcome, and the greatness that we possess. To me, Black history is being made every day, which is why I celebrate Black history all year.

List some influential musicians that inspire you and why. (Can be across as many genres as you like).

My musical influences are Chaka Khan, Betty Davis, Eddie Hazel, Prince, Sade, and Lady Saw, one of my favorite reggae artists.

What Black artist are you listening to right now?

Right now, I can’t stop listening to Masego, Tanerélle, Lion Babe, Summer Walker, H.E.R, and Tinashe.

Share one piece of advice for any of those young girls, womxn, lgbtq+, and trans people watching and looking up to you.

My advice would be to surround yourself with like-minded people, those who will have your best interest at heart. Do well in school, never give up on your dreams, and don’t be afraid to walk away from toxic people.

Do you have any upcoming projects you are working on that you would like to share?

I’m working on a podcast and upcoming album. Details will be available on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/theOnyxChord
