Within Temptation's Sharon den Adel chats with us about new album, Resist, new single and more

Metal-rock band, Within Temptation, whose career has spanned two decades, have recently inked a new record deal, and have a new album, Resist, releasing on December 14. The album will be out on Spinefarm in the US. Resist features ten original and anthemic tracks, which the band is known for. This album’s sound came about due to a change the band felt they needed altogether.

The first single from the album, “The Reckoning,” features Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix, and is a powerful first single that’s just the right lead-in for the album’s impending release. Check it out here. Pre-order your own copy of Resist here. Within Temptation have previously released six studio albums as featured below:

  1. Enter (1997)
  2. Mother Earth (2000)
  3. The Silent Force (2004)
  4. The Heart of Everything (2007)
  5. The Unforgiving (2011)
  6. Hydra (2014)

The band’s European tour kicks off in October and consists of 35 dates in 18 countries. More dates around the globe will follow in 2019. Lead singer, Sharon den Adel, spoke with us about this album being the band’s saving force of keeping them together, their new deal, their new single “The Reckoning,” and much more.

You all recently inked a deal with Universal Music Germany…what led to this decision?

Sharon den Adel: The thing that convinced us was a great presentation at their office in Berlin by enthusiastic passioned people with new ideas.

We’re all anxiously awaiting the new album, Resist, due out Dec. 14. What was the recording and writing process like for it?

Sharon: When we started writing again, the ideas came quick and the recording went fluently more than ever before. It’s so important to write the first key song which is like the first piece off a puzzle.

Sharon, you mentioned that if it wasn’t for this album, the band wouldn’t be here anymore. Can you elaborate on this?

Sharon: Yes, that’s true. After the last tour I was close to a burn-out and I didn’t have any inspiration for a new WT album. I had to take distance from WT to understand why this was happing and not knowing if WT would be able to exist in the future. After a while I tried to write again but I still couldn’t write WT material, the songs I did write ended up on the first album of my solo project My Indigo. The project was important because the music was different and it took my out of my comfort zone in many ways. Eventually it even helped us to write the songs for Resist, using different sounds and recording guitars and drums in a way we would never had thought of if ‘ My indigo’ had not been made.

What was it like recording with Jacoby Shaddix on the first single from the album, “The Reckoning.” It’s an amazing song, by the way, and such a powerfully good song to be the first one released!

Sharon: It was great! We’ve always liked the band but we never met them until Graspop in Belgium a few years back. I talked Jacoby and he is such a super nice guy and that was the starting point. We send him the song, he loved it and we talked through facetime with each other about it. He recorded it at home. We are super happy how the song turned out, the song became even more intense with his vocals on it.

Are there any other collaborations on the album that you guys are excited for the fans to hear?

Sharon: Yes, two more 🙂

You guys are kicking off a huge tour before the album comes out. What do you guys most like about touring?

Sharon: The fun we have together band, crew and fans, but also the different parts of the world we get to see and the new people we meet 🙂

Some fun questions:

What was your first album on vinyl, cassette and/or CD?

Sharon:
Moody Blues on cassette … I was four years old and I still got it!

What five artists or bands would you not want to live without?

Sharon:

I have to go for my old time favorites I grew up with;
-Nirvana
-Tori Amos
-Pink Floyd
-Eagles
-Bruce Springsteen

After these 5 a lot of metal bands of course, but you only gave me 5 options! (laughs)

Which musician are you guys really wanting to collaborate with one day?

Sharon: No idea at this point!

Do you have a guilty music or entertainment pleasure?

Sharon:
“Grease” …(laughs) I know every song!
