(August 2, 2022) — Portland, Oregon’s Anna Tivel is set to release her highly anticipated new album Outsiders on August 19 via Mama Bird Recording Co. (Damien Jurado, Courtney Marie Andrews, Haley Heynderickx, Myriam Gendron). Recorded almost entirely live to tape in Rock Island, IL, the 11-track set is a collaborative exploration from the same vibrant group of friends who helped craft Tivel’s acclaimed record, The Question — heralded by NPR Music as “One Of The Most Ambitious Folk Records of 2019” — including producer & multi-instrumentalist Shane Leonard and engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens). Outsiders is available for pre-order now at Bandcamp.
The album’s third and final single ahead of release “The Dial” is a “Southern rock song with an industrial, alt-rock tinge” arriving today via a premiere at FLOOD Magazine, which notes, “[Tivel’s latest single] is a boot-stomping reminder that somebody’s curbside trash is another’s inspirational treasure. Alongside rubbery, reverb-effected guitar and shuffling percussion, Tivel sings about going backward. That sentiment extends to feeling down on her luck and retreating to the side of the road only to find a token of good fortune.” Tivel offers,
“I wrote ‘The Dial’ on the back of a gas receipt on a long drive from Utah to Colorado. A car in front of me threw some trash out the window and when I got closer it turned out one of the items was a little dreamcatcher. I was at the tail end of a long tour, just feeling kind of raw and doubtful and it made me feel like throwing up my hands and laughing. Driving all over the place playing songs about my feelings for strangers is serious business to me, a deep devotion and a privilege. And it’s also sometimes totally nuts, like some hilarious simulation where you keep finding yourself peeing through a funnel drilled in the floor of a shitty van outside the place where you just poured your heart out in front of three drunk people who kept asking the bartender to turn the tv back on. I’m glad both things exist, the expansive and the humbling, and I’ll never toss my dreamcatcher.”
Of the forthcoming record, Tivel adds,
“Outsiders is a meditation on otherness, a deep dive into the myriad forces that keep us from connecting in real ways and a celebration of the ones that draw us together. From space exploration to schizophrenia, power imbalance to potent honesty in an old van, these songs are meant as a small prayer of recognition for loneliness and love, and all the ways we try and fail and try again to see each other clearly and let ourselves be seen.”
Tivel recently shared album single “Black Umbrella” which elicited favorable comparisons to work by labelmate Haley Heynderickx, Ontario art-folk band The Acorn, and even Bob Dylan and Joan Baez (For The Rabbits). Folk Alley previously premiered the album’s title track, saying, “The songs that come from Anna Tivel are always thoughtful and emotionally intelligent. There’s a lightness to them—possibly due to the airiness of her vocals, but also the sparse poetry of her lyrics and the way she fills in music around them. Rather than saturate her soundscapes, she offers just enough of a pillow for the songs to jump and land.” The track has since been shared by The Bluegrass Situation, Glide Magazine, Folk Radio UK, AmericanaUK, OPB, WXPN, and more, with the latter praising, “Tivel is building her name across the U.S. and beyond with her beautifully haunting, intimate albums.”
