GC: We are here to talk about your new limited edition Blu DeTiger x Player Plus Jazz Bass, which is incredible. What was the most exciting part of collaborating with Fender to create your first-ever signature bass?
BDT: The whole experience has been incredible and super fulfilling. Just working with Fender as a company has been really special because, to me, they’re a timeless and classic guitar company. When I picture a guitar, a bass, that’s what I see—I see a Fender in my head. The fact that I got to go to the factory, check it out, see how everything gets made, and meet everyone has been a really cool experience that not many people get to do. I’m super grateful for that.
For Blu, having a signature bass isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s a testament to her creative control and the versatility of her sound. Her new bass is designed to be as flexible as her music, making it perfect for both high-energy festival performances at events like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, as well as long studio sessions where she explores different styles.
GC: You said that this bass reflects everything that you love about playing. How did you ensure that it captured not just your sound, but your personal vibe and energy?
BDT: The aesthetics have a lot to do with that. They matched my vibe and personality. I wanted this bass to be its own piece of art, something beautiful on its own. Obviously, my name is Blu, so I had to make it blue, right? And I just really wanted it to shine on stage. And when I’m playing an instrument that is really beautiful, I feel more beautiful.
In terms of the technical side, I really wanted to make a bass that was good for both studio and touring. We really accomplished that. It’s the lightest-weight bass Fender has ever made, which is amazing. Touring is really hard on the body—traveling, airports, buses—I’ve had mad back problems for a long time. I couldn’t find something lightweight that also sounded really good. We worked really hard to make sure the bass was lightweight but didn’t lose any frequency range or punch. You can get any kind of sound out of it, and it’s super versatile with a unique pickup configuration. It just punches through the mix—bright, punchy, and crisp, but it can also get rocky and cut through when needed.
Blu’s All I Ever Want Is Everything LP embodies her hybrid style, combining her bass mastery with influences from club music, funk, pop, and indie rock. Songs like “Dangerous Game,” “Latency,” and “Cut Me Down” have earned critical praise and massive career trajectory.
GC: The sounds you’re able to get out of this bass are super applicable to your music, especially with your new record, All I Ever Want Is Everything. It blends pop, rock, and funk in such a unique way, and you collaborated with so many incredible people. How does this bass help you shift between those different styles?
BDT: Yeah, the humbucker pickup is really sick! This was the first time I got into humbuckers, and I wanted that Bernard Edwards sound, like an old Stingray. We tested it out, and it was awesome. I’ve been listening to a lot of house music and bass lines like that lately. Slap bass is great on it, and it complements all my normal fills and techniques. It’s the bass I’ve always wanted to have, and now I do!
GC: Do you think the sounds from this new bass will inspire your upcoming music?
BDT: Oh, 100%! It already has! I was in the studio yesterday, and I was like, “Whoa, this sounds sick.” It’s been really fun.

BDT: To be empowered. Do your thing, follow your passion, practice, and trust yourself. Trust your joy — whatever is giving you joy, trust that. Go for it.

GC: We know that sometimes, as Guitar Girl Magazine, this world can, for lack of a better term, be a bit of a boys’ club. What message do you have for female bassists carving their own paths?
BDT: I think it’s gotten a bit better, especially with the pandemic and social media. But when I was growing up, there were very few female bassists to look up to. No one was doing exactly what I wanted to do—singing, playing, and leading. Anytime someone would say, “Oh, she just got the gig because she’s a girl,” I’d be like, “No, I got it because I’m literally better than any of you.”
GC: You’ve played at huge festivals like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. What’s it like interacting with fans at those events?
BDT: The festivals are really special because of the bigger crowds, but what I love most is being in conversation with other artists on the lineup. Watching other people’s sets and seeing fans show up early to catch mine is awesome. I grew up going to festivals, so it’s a full-circle moment for me.
GC: So, as someone who picked up the bass at seven years old, how does this signature model represent your journey from that little girl to a trailblazer in the industry?
BDT: It’s crazy! It’s like a basketball player getting their own shoe—it’s the goal. It means you’re recognized for your style and have something unique that gives others inspiration. I’ve made my mark and added to the history of the brand. That’s really cool.
GC: Lastly, how does this bass feel like the next step in your journey as an artist, and what can we expect from you next?
BDT: More music, more shows, and taking this baby on the road! I’ve been playing it for a few months, but now I can officially talk about it. I’m excited to keep making new music and taking it into the studio.
