Some of the best country songwriting comes from knowing how to put complicated feelings into words. On her debut EP, Why in the World, Maddie Lenhart does exactly that, delivering six songs that navigate heartbreak, reflection, and the uncertain process of finding your way forward.
Produced by Brad Hill, the six-track collection is rooted in Lenhart’s Appalachian influences, with organic instrumentation and dreamy production giving the songs plenty of room to breathe. Her writing is the clear centerpiece, balancing conversational details with thoughtful observations that make even the most personal stories feel familiar.

The title track is a standout example. Written alongside Jay Knowles and Jen Stegall, “Why in the World” takes the questions we rarely stop to consider and turns them into something much more personal, capturing the frustration of searching for answers after losing someone you thought would always be there. It is an especially strong showcase of Lenhart’s ability to build an emotional story around an idea that feels both clever and deeply relatable.

Across the EP, “Empty Room,” “Newton’s First Law,” “It’s Not Like,” “A Glimpse of It,” and the focus track “Easy on You” each contribute to a larger story about love, loss, growth, and learning to trust yourself again. Rather than staying in one emotional place, the project allows listeners to experience the uncertainty, difficult realizations, and moments of hope that come with moving forward.
Lenhart’s strength lies in her attention to the details. She understands that the smallest observations can sometimes communicate the biggest feelings, and Why in the World gives that instinct a strong musical foundation.
A thoughtful and well-crafted debut, Why in the World establishes Maddie Lenhart as a songwriter with something meaningful to say and the talent to make people listen.
