Alyssa Trahan’s Baby Blues and Stilettos weaves in and out of riffs, chords, and arpeggios as easily as it weaves in and out of moods. In doing so, it provides a fabric that tells the story of so many strong females.
Trahan is an indie country singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and audio engineer. Originally from East Rochester, NY, she moved to Nashville to pursue her dreams and signed her first publishing deal just two years later. She also works as a producer on her own tracks as well as the music of other artists.
The singer has shared the stage with many well-known musicians, but since the pandemic started, she’s been in writing mode. Her new album, Baby Blues and Stilettos, dropped on March 5. She is credited with writing and producing each song and made all the graphics and videos herself. Although Trahan is a shredder guitarist, she was accompanied on select songs by her father and guitar teacher.
The album has an overall theme of empowerment and optimism. Here’s what Trahan has to say about her new release. “Making this album was a journey full of ups and downs, but I am so proud of how it came out and so excited for everyone to finally hear it! I was scared to take on the idea of self-producing a record during a pandemic, but I’m so glad I did! I learned and grew so much during the process. This album truly shows every side of me as an artist, songwriter, and producer.”
“We Used to Be Happy” is being promoted as the album’s single. It has a country alternative vibe. Although very much a ballad (get your hankies out), it has an uplifting chorus that makes the listener know they will get some of that happiness back.
“Ain’t Ever Going Back” is another strong release that already garnered 1 million views on Tik Tok. It has a downhome sultry, sexy feel and a power chorus.
“My Favorite Song” is wedged between the two previously mentioned tracks. Its lyrics alone makes it a force to be reckoned with. When Trahan crooned, “You ruined my favorite song, I used to want to sing along, and now the melody sounds all wrong,” it definitely put a smile on my face.
“Psychology” is another breakaway hit. It was featured on Spotify’s New Music Nashville playlist. The opening has an almost hip-hop/reggae vibe with staccato riffs that segue into a catchy chorus.
“Pickle Jar” is another that caught my attention. It has a great traditional country vibe and a strong message. No thanks, guys. I don’t need you. I can open my own pickle jar, thank you very much!
After listening to the album in its entirety, I can safely say there was not a dud in the bunch. Trahan delivers with clever lyrics, infectious choruses, tasteful guitar parts, and a sound that blends new and old. Country and pop fans should be adding this one to their music collection.
