FENDER MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION ANNOUNCES 2023 MASTERBUILT AND CUSTOM SHOP COLLECTIONS FROM FENDER®, JACKSON®, CHARVEL® AND GRETSCH®

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (August 7, 2023) Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) today – alongside the Fender Custom Shop, the Jackson Custom Shop, the Charvel Custom Shop and the Gretsch Custom Shop – announces the launch of their annual 2023 Masterbuilt collections. With a reputation for creating the world’s finest and most-innovative custom guitars for artists, players and collectors, FMIC’s esteemed Custom Shops demonstrate the utmost quality and craftsmanship through their roster of gifted master builders. Today’s announcement includes many exciting models including Fender Custom Shop’s highlight anticipated California Streetwoods Collection, which was made from trees that were safely removed from urban forestry throughout the state of California, its annual Prestige Collection, and one-of-a-kind models built by the industry’s most talented craftsmen.

2023 CALIFORNIA STREETWOODS COLLECTION

Every year, the Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilders design a collection of unique instruments centered around a singular focus. Past inspiration has been drawn from specific colors and finishes, like 2021’s Surf Green with Envy Collection, or from a unique collaboration, like 2022’s Fender Custom Shop Hot Wheels collection, which was a special collaboration with Mattel, Inc and Hot Wheels™. For 2023, the Fender Custom Shop worked together with Street Tree Revival, an urban wood recycling program who makes every effort to ensure trees don’t end up in landfills.   Together they created the California Streetwood Collection.

Each masterbuilder hand-selected their lumber with insight from Street Tree Revival’s John Mahoney, who oversees the recycling program. As with all wood supplied by Street Tree Revival, these trees were safely removed from urban forestry throughout the state of California, salvaging trees lost during storms, disease or natural deterioration. Urban wood, salvaged from the streets, results in  beautiful and inspiring ranges of one-of-a-kind guitars and basses, carefully crafted to highlight the distinctive qualities of these incredible woods. The Fender Custom Shop x California Streetwood Collection includes:

CALIFORNIA STREETWOODS ELM TOP CABRONITA – RELIC®, MASTERBUILT BY DAVE BROWN, NATURAL OIL (ONE OF A KIND) ($11,875.00 USD, £11,399.00 GBP, €13,099.00 EUR, $19,499.00 AUD,  ¥2,086,700 JPY) Inspired by the desire to reintroduce the Cabronita Especial into the line as a masterbuilt instrument, several updates were made to enhance its features, including: refining the neck shape, selecting a specific fret wire and fine-tuning the capacitor network to achieve the instrument’s unique sound qualities. Players will be excited to discover the use of  pear tree for the neck,  an unconventional choice offering a visually striking reddish color and an intriguing grain/flame pattern. This guitar showcases a figured elm top, carefully bonded to a lightly roasted ash body that has been meticulously finish-sanded with soft padded sandpaper, accentuating the tactile feel of the grain. Alternative woods, not commonly considered “tone woods,” can offer both visual appeal and potentially unique sound differences or advantages, expanding the possibilities for instrument construction. Relic® oil finish, 2-piece select ash body with elm top, 1-piece pearwood neck with modern “C” Back-Shape, 9.5″ radius, 21 medium jumbo frets, TV Jones® Power’Tron™ (bridge) and TV Jones® Classic (neck) pickups, La Cabronita wiring and controls, 3-way switch, single-ply parchment pickguard, vintage-style hardtail bridge, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut, disc string tree, deluxe hardshell case, strap and a Certificate of Authenticity.

When it comes to specs, enthusiasts will be particularly excited to discover the unique pickup selector which features a single Novak humbucker with a 3-position blade switch. Position 1 delivers the raw power of the humbucker, position 2 taps it to a single coil and position 3 combines the humbucker with a greasebucket circuit to control certain frequencies. This provides a tonal change reminiscent of a single coil in the neck position of a Stratocaster. The wood sourced for this build is from a ficus tree. Instead of ending up in a landfill, this beautiful wood is now showcased on stage. NOS lacquer finish with WLS undercoat, select ficus body, quartersawn maple neck with ’69 style “U” back-shape, round-lam blonde rosewood fingerboard with abalone face dots, 9.5″ radius, 21 medium jumbo frets, Curtis Novak custom-wound humbucking pickup, custom wiring and controls, 3-way switch, single-ply ivoroid pickguard, 2-point custom classic tremolo, modern locking tuning machines, bone nut, wing string tree, deluxe hardshell case, strap and a Certificate of Authenticity.

The elm was cut into two pieces and cleverly flipped over to create a unique ‘skunk’ stripe effect with the white stripes now converging at the center. This became the main spread of the guitar’s design. Silver maple featured captivating spalted patterns and interesting black lines that seemingly mirrored the contour of a guitar body. The pieces were bookmatched resulting in the lines harmoniously following the contours of the guitar shape, adding a visually stunning touch to the instrument’s overall aesthetics. This not only creates a pleasing aesthetic flow between the body and the neck but also adds an intriguing contrast to the darker neck wood. The use of wood sourced from local parks which demonstrates a meaningful and sustainable approach to creating instruments. NOS lacquer finish, select ash thinline body with blonde rosewood top, acacia neck with ’60s style oval “C” back-shape, blonde rosewood fingerboard, 9.5″ radius, 21 narrow tall  frets, Custom Shop Josefina hand-wound Twisted Tele pickups, modern Tele wiring, 3-way switch, 4-ply brown shell pickguard, ’58-’63 Tele bridge with threaded steel saddles, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut, wing string tree with tall metal spacer, deluxe hardshell case, strap, and a Certificate of Authenticity.

While the main attraction is undoubtedly the top, there are other exciting features that consumers will appreciate, such as the arm contour and black hardware, which add delightful details to the overall design. However, it’s important to note that this build is not solely focused on its gorgeous appearance; it’s also designed to produce beautiful sound. By keeping the overall specs simple, such as omitting fret markers, pickguard and control plate, the focus is solely on the stunning figured pearwood fretboard and the one-piece elm top and back of the body. This instantly sparked the vision of creating a bound 50’s P-Bass with an amber stain, reminiscent of the Gretsch® round ups. Drawing inspiration from the split pick-up design of a later model P-Bass, these details add a unique and personalized touch to the instrument. The Jackson Custom Shop has turned out world-class custom guitars ranging from the fine to the fantastic ever since the Jackson name was first affixed to a headstock in 1980. The reason for this impressive longevity is simple: Jackson was a custom shop from the very beginning. Every Jackson guitar was an original, high-performing custom instrument.

Whereas some production guitar-makers open their own custom shops after reaching a certain age or level of success, Jackson existed from its early days as nothing but a custom shop, building distinctive and meticulously crafted instruments for a very exacting clientele. No design was too crazy and no idea too far-fetched—if someone conceived it, Jackson’s talented, imaginative craftsmen built it. This early emphasis on originality and even outlandish one-off instruments proved enormously influential for Jackson’s most famous and oft-copied body shapes. It’s a longstanding tradition of US.-made greatness and devotion to craftsmanship that flourishes to this day.

JACKSON® CUSTOM SHOP JTX, DICHROLAM®, MASTERBUILT BY “METAL” JOE WILLIAMS (ONE OF A KIND) ($8,999.99 USD, £8,849.00 GBP, €10,199.00 EUR, ¥1,444,300 JPY) The JTX is a great design of a single cut body style with a sleek appearance that pairs extremely well with the incredible Dichrolam chameleon top. Wanting to let the top, the body style and beauty of the woods do the talking, the rest of the specs are purposefully straight forward. The cooked maple neck blends with the cooked alder body seamlessly, and the bare ebony fretboard keeps the eyes focused on the Dichrolam top. The natural back and sides leave no doubt about the quality of the craftsmanship. Jackson is known for floating tremolos but there are many players who love a hardtail bridge. So Williams decided on the hipshot hardtail bridge and a single bare knuckle aftermath pickup for the hardware. With the stainless steel frets and overall balance of the instrument, the overall impression of the guitar is an extremely comfortable, no nonsense shred machine. Other features include a gloss urethane finish, select roasted alder body, exotic dichrolam top, caramelized flame maple bolt-on neck construction, ebony fingerboard, 6-in-line pointy Jackson® headstock with Dichrolam face, no inlays, blue Luminlay® position markers, dual-action wheel-adjusted truss rod, 24 – 6100 stainless steel frets, 12″ to 16″ compound radius fingerboard, black body binding, Bare Knuckle Aftermath bridge pickup, push/pull master volume, Hipshot® hardtail bridge, Hipshot® locking tuners, black hardware,  hardshell molded case and a Certificate of Authenticity.

JACKSON® CUSTOM SHOP ROSWELL RHOADS, CYAN/MAGENTA INTERFERENCE, MASTERBUILT BY “METAL” JOE WILLIAMS (ONE OF A KIND) ($9,999.99 USD, £9,849.00 GBP, €11,349.00 EUR, ¥1,986,600 JPY) The Roswell is certainly different than nearly anything in the Jackson fold but is still 100% a Jackson entity. The in-line reverse Jackson headstock sets this Roswell apart from any other but doesn’t take away from its genuineness. Additionally, there are very few neck-though Roswell Rhoads in existence, which makes the construction of this model very rare. To set it apart even more and keeping with the “out of this world” vibe, an interference finish is used under black crackle, which gives it a sense of an extraterrestrial like ore. Other features include a gloss urethane finish, genuine mahogany body wings, quartersawn maple neck-through design, ebony fingerboard, reversed 6-in-line pointy Jackson® headstock, reversed abalone sharkfin inlays, ivoroid neck and headstock binding, blue Luminlay® position markers, graphite reinforced dual-action truss rod, 22  stainless steel jumbo frets, 12″ to 16″ compound radius fingerboard, Bare Knuckle Aftermath Battleworn bridge and neck pickups, master volume, 3-way toggle switch, recessed Floyd Rose® Original locking tremolo bridge, Gotoh® tuners, black hardware,  hardshell molded case and a Certificate of Authenticity.

JACKSON® CUSTOM SHOP SPECIAL EDITION RHOADS, GRAFFITI YELLOW ($5,879.99 USD, £5,849.00 GBP, €6,699.00 EUR, $9,699.00 ¥1,150,600 JPY) In collaboration with FU Tone, the Jackson Custom Shop expanded their options menu, aiming to showcase these exciting new options in their builds. With a strong desire to integrate the upgrades, the team sought to create a design that would leave a lasting impression. The vibrant red hues beautifully contrast with the yellow, while the red logo serves as the perfect finishing touch, tying the whole design together cohesively. At the heart of the guitar’s standout features lies the Floyd Rose upgrades, instantly capturing attention and ensuring a captivating playing experience with its fast and dynamic performance. Features include a gloss urethane finish, select alder body wings, 3-piece laminated maple neck-through design, ebony fingerboard, 6-in-line pointy Jackson® headstock, black neck and headstock binding, white position markers, dual-action truss rod, 24  stainless steel jumbo frets. 12″ to 16″ compound radius fingerboard, red DiMarzio® Super Distortion® bridge pickup, master volume, recessed Original Floyd Rose® locking tremolo bridge with FU Tone red titanium upgrades, Gotoh® tuners, black hardware,  hardshell molded case and a Certificate of Authenticity.

JACKSON® CUSTOM SHOP SPECIAL EDITION KELLY™, 3 TONE SUNBURST ($6,239.99 USD, £6,149.00 GBP, €7,099.00 EUR, $10,199.00 AUD, ¥1,326,600 JPY) In their pursuit of highlighting the stunning wood available, the Jackson Custom Shop made a conscious decision to deviate from the usual practice of painting on the Jackson and Charvel lines. Instead, they aimed to showcase the inherent beauty of the roasted woods and the exquisite sound they produce. One of the standout features is the roasted flame maple fingerboard, adding a touch of elegance to the design. Another innovative addition is the wheel-action truss rod adjustment on a neck-through instrument, a novel concept that sets this Jackson custom shop guitar apart from the rest. Features include a gloss urethane finish, premium ash body wings, 1/8″ flame maple top, oil finished roasted quartersawn maple neck-through design, roasted flame maple fingerboard, 6-in-line pointy Jackson® headstock, black sharkfin inlays, black neck and headstock binding, brass position markers, graphite reinforced dual-action wheel-adjusted truss rod, 24  jumbo frets, 12″ to 16″ compound radius fingerboard, Seymour Duncan® JB Model™ bridge pickup, DiMarzio® ’59 Model™ neck pickup, master volume, master tone, 3-way toggle switch, Gotoh® Tune-o-matic style bridge, Gotoh® tuners, black and brass hardware,  hardshell molded case and a Certificate of Authenticity.
