The Future of Music Unfolds: Georgia Tech Announces 26th Annual Guthman Musical Instrument Competition

ATLANTA, GA  Nov. 1 2023 – The Guthman Musical Instrument Competition, a preeminent music technology event hosted by the Georgia Tech School of Music, announces its return to the Georgia Tech campus for its 26th year March 8-9, 2024. Selection of finalists for the 2024 competition is currently underway.

Recognized as “The Pulitzer of the New Instrument World,” the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition offers a global perspective into the ways individuals create, consume, and define music, today as well as into the future. Each year, the competition features a wide range of innovative musical instruments that expand the boundaries of musical instrument technology, design, and performance.

Past Guthman Competition winners have gone on to receive critical acclaim and recognition for their designs, launching innovative music companies around their instruments. Such companies and instruments include the Teenage Engineering OP-1, Roli Seaboard, Skoog, and the Electro-Spit ESX-1, to name a few.

A Georgia Tech faculty panel is currently in the process of reviewing scores of entries from 20 countries around the world for finalist consideration. The finalist announcement will be made during the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California in January 2024.

“Each year, we receive a wide range of innovative musical instrument designs from around the world during the submissions process,” said Jason Freeman, Professor of Music and Chair of the School of Music at Georgia Tech. “While only a handful of these designs will make it to the final competition, it’s always exciting to see the spirit of innovation and imagination alive and well in individuals from all over the world when it comes to musical instrument design. We can’t wait to see what new instruments and designs make it to the finals this year.”
