In light of the recent #MeToo movement, Tammie Shannon has a story to tell, and it’s important and needs to be heard. Even more so, she has a voice that resonates with her story, and one that needs to be told.
Shannon is a blues artist hailing from Nashville and is also a survivor of sexual abuse as a child. Having recovered from a traumatic childhood, today she’s a mother who raised three daughters as a single Mom, and is also a successful business owner, along with budding music career. Music is her outlet for healing from her emotional scars.
With her new single “Bulletproof,” Shannon bares her soul and the single will be featured on her upcoming debut album, All of Me, out this April. Listen to “Bulletproof” here. When asked what “Bulletproof” means to her, Shannon shares that “writing “Bulletproof” has been the most difficult, challenging work I’ve done. To write it meant, I had to dig down deep, to be honest with myself in order to tell it. I began to go through stages. The first stage for me was the realization, I had spent my entire life grieving the absence of my father, bargaining with myself by saying, if I was successful in business he would love me and be proud of me which denied myself the ability to grieve my own personal loss and what the twelve-year-old me had suffered. Then there were days I went without talking to anyone, which you could call the depression stage. The last stage for me was anger. This was real screaming and crying anger. I found myself screaming at the top of my lungs “f–k you” until the “f–k you’s” became “I forgive you.” It was the type of screaming and crying that comes from deep in the gut when you just have to empty your vessel as you purge yourself. So that’s what I did. Every word of truth I told to myself, every lyric of pain and betrayal was now being replaced with healing. The tears of hurt became tears of joy and relief. I was finally telling my story. I was finally free.”
