Callaghan’s Birthday Show at Eddie Owen Presents

On a clear and chilly evening in quaint downtown Duluth, GA, still adorned with holiday lights, Callaghan celebrated her Birthday Bash at the famed Eddie Owen Presents @ Red Clay Music Foundry to a sold out theatre.

Opening for Callaghan was solo act Michael McDermott who switched between acoustic guitar and piano. I found the very talented McDermott to be honest and heartfelt, with a style reminiscent of Bob Dylan and John Lennon (“I Don’t Want to be a Soldier”). He himself was celebrating last night as he announced that he has been clean and sober for one year. McDermott sang a six song set list which included some of his earlier songs like “A Wall I Must Climb, ” “Can’t Sleep Tonight,” and “Wounded,” as well as some tunes off his latest album Hit Me Back including “I Know a Place” and “Ever After.”

The stage was set for Callaghan to appear in a tea light glow with a HAILUN grand piano centered in the midst of a keyboard, standing and boom mics, a cajon set, with accompaniment by electric, acoustic and bass guitars, letting the audience know they were in for a great night of music.

Callaghan appeared on stage very casual but excited to be back in front of a Georgia crowd at Eddie Owen Presents and expressed her honor of celebrating her birthday with her fans which coincided with this exact same night.  The singer/songwriter eased into “Crazy Beautiful Life” followed by “Parachute” off of her soon to be released album A History of Now. Then, to get the audience in an uplifted mood and singing along, she broke into a spot on rendition of Janis Joplin’s “Take a Little Piece of My Heart.”  That did it.  The audience was rocking and eager for more.

Callaghan treated the audience with a selection of songs off her new album, peppered in with some of her other originals, and covers equally as proficient as the Joplin number including Elton John’s “Your Song,” Roberta Flack’s “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” and then another surprise for the audience which came in the second song of the encore and final song of the night, legendary Carly Simon’s “Nobody Does It Better” and dedicated it to “all of you.” The surprise came when she cleverly replaced “baby, you’re the best” with “Georgia, you’re the best,” once again eliciting a loud applause of approval from her fans, who would have loved more but it was not to be.  Instead, Callaghan invited the crowd to join her in the lobby for a “chat” and signings…and they readily obliged!
