Nashville-based rising country singer-songwriter and actor Evanthia recently released her debut single, “The Deep End,” co-written with Wyatt Durette and Tyler Filmore.
A song for hopeless romantics, “The Deep End” captures the feeling of falling completely in love, but unsure whether her love is returned.
The lyrics reveal her uncertainty: “Before we dive in the deep end / I need to know you’ll save us.”
Along with a massive following on social media, Evanthia’s music has caught the attention of industry professionals such as Grammy-winner Tony Brown, who says, “Evanthia is that one artist/writer who can stand amongst today’s elite group of aspiring deep songwriters with songs that are so well-crafted.”
Evanthia’s remarkable talent and dedication have positioned her as one of the most promising young artists of her generation. Her hard work has earned her a coveted spot with Paradigm, one of the industry’s top talent agencies.
Highlighted by Evanthia’s silky, nuanced voice, “The Deep End” travels on alluring country-pop colors, featuring banjos, steel guitar, and luscious acoustic guitars.
Guitar Girl Magazine caught up with Evanthia to discover more about the inspiration for “The Deep End,” her definition of tone, and her songwriting process.
What inspired your debut single, “The Deep End?”
‘The Deep End’ was inspired by a love story I wrote in my journal. During my writing, the co-writers and I talked about all the ideas of love and when do we know to go all in or is it a fairytale we might have made up. Relationships can be hard at times when one person might fall faster than the other. I wanted this song to be relatable. I wanted to show that it’s ok to ask someone how they feel. And it’s also ok to be ready to walk away.
How did you get started in music?
I have always loved singing. When I was younger, I was a part of a musical theatre company in my hometown. I would also watch Miley Cyrus on Disney Channel. I knew then that I wanted to be a performer. I continued over the years with musical theater and taking guitar and piano lessons. The love for music stayed with me. My next instrument I would love to learn are the drums. I want to be able to play on stage for one of my songs.
Where are you from?
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. At the age of 13, I went to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Lived there part-time, traveling back and forth from St. Louis to LA. I now currently live in Nashville, TN.
Did your hometown impact your sound?
My hometown didn’t really impact my sound. But looking back to my childhood, country music was always playing in my house. My family loves country music. Being in Nashville has had a great impact on my sound. There are so many creative people that live here. The history of music alone here is amazing. The wisdom that so many offer also contributes to my music.
Did your sound evolve naturally, or did you deliberately push it in a certain direction?
My sound is definitely original. I have always loved different sounds or styles of music. But I feel like my sound suits me and my style. I feel like it’s a cross between Taylor Swift and Kacey Musgraves. I feel it’s important to establish who you are as an artist to make it easier for a listener to relate to you. Staying consistent but evolving lyrically.
What kind of guitar do you play?
I use different guitars for different songs, travel, studio, and performance. A favorite of mine is my 1968 Dove Gibson guitar. She is beautiful. She has such a vibey sound to her that you can almost hear her history. That’s what makes her sound so special.
What is your definition of tone? And is your tone evolving?
I feel like tone is how singers communicate how they are feeling in a song. You can change your tone and work on it, but you have to stay consistent. I feel like mine is what makes my sound unique. I have a natural flip into my head voice, I can’t explain it, but it has always been there, and my listeners love it.
What inspires your writing? Do you draw inspiration from poems, music, or other media?
My song inspirations mostly come from experiences, friends, movies, and poetry. Most of my songs are real experiences, but recently I have been practicing writing songs about others’ feelings and how it would sound looking through their eyes. Writing alone is fun but collaboration is also a favorite of mine. I enjoy creating a story that I pull from different collabs.
What can you share about your writing process?
When I write I take inspiration from my journal, movies, or from friends. It normally comes at random times, and I have to immediately write it down or do a voice memo. From there I start to build the song with more lyrics and chords on my guitar. I also love co-writing with other writers because you can bounce ideas off of each other.
Which artists in your opinion are killing it right now?
I feel like Zach Bryan is killing it right now. He built his following through YouTube and continues to stay true to his style. Another artist that is a favorite of mine and someone that inspires me is Taylor Swift. She is the definition of a girl boss in this industry.
How do you define success?
Success is different for each individual. For me it’s about finding and living my purpose. I love what I am doing on a daily basis, whether it’s learning something new or even making mistakes and growing from them. My story will have different levels of success. I will always work towards different goals and dreams to reach, both personal and professional.
What can your fans look forward to over the next six months? Music videos? Live gigs?
I am excited to share that I am releasing my next single this July the 28th. A music video will be coming out as well within the few weeks that follow. I am already writing and back in the studio working on the next song. There are several live performances coming up that I will definitely share soon! So much more music is coming soon as well as a new film I will be in.
