Following on the heels of her wonderful 2023 album, In the Beginning, singer-songwriter Maria Deirisarri recently unveiled her latest single, “bluejay,” a song that portrays the simple, sweet feel of summer romance. The first of five new songs, “bluejay” is from Deirisarri’s upcoming EP, Si Vis Pacem.
According to Deirisarri, “The title of the song is actually an allusion to its muse’s name; but I wasn’t about to name it after him, so I chose the next best bird.”
Collaborating with folk artist Corey Kilgannon, “bluejay” was recorded at his studio located on the second floor of Beaches Vineyard Church. Utilizing analog technology, each take had to be perfect because correcting specific lines or verses was almost impossible. This recording method produced an authentic, unfiltered sound.
Deirisarri says, “Recording ‘bluejay’ was hardddd since we didn’t have a click track, and ‘bluejay’ is naturally a very rhythmic song. We had to rely on the guitars to guide the rhythm instead of a bass or drums, which I think ended up making it that much more romantic.”
Only 17 years old, Deirisarri’s gift for melody and lyricism belies her age. Based in Atlanta, she is comfortable exploring various genres, ranging from alternative to bossa nova. With over 77,000 streams on Spotify, she has been featured in elite media outlets.
Her awards include the Trailblazing Performer accolade from the International Singer-Songwriters Association, a second-place finish in Omega’s Got Talent, and the Talent Preliminary Award in the Miss Georgia Teen Volunteer Competition.
Rolling out on the delicious, retro flow of Deirisarri’s nuanced voice, “bluejay” reveals hints of jazz flavors merged with voluptuous bossa nova surfaces. A lightly strumming acoustic guitar and a sparkling, elegant piano infuses the melody with an airy, quixotic motion.
