Music Premiere: Giulia Millanta Unveils New Single “Fatale”

Singer-songwriter and chef Giulia Millanta releases her new single, “Fatale,” a track lifted from her upcoming album, Only Luna Knows, slated for release on April 19, along with her Italian cookbook, Dinner with Giulia – Flavors, Songs and Stories of a Florentine Troubadour.

Originally from Florence, Italy, and now based in Austin, Texas, Millanta collaborated with Miles Zuniga, Massimiliano Larocca, and Gabriel Rhodes to craft the 10 songs on Only Luna Knows. The album reveals an array of influences from opera, Paul Simon, and Pink Floyd, as well as traditional tunes from the UK, US, and South America. Millanta’s affinity for dark, sensual, mysterious “and even dangerous” tones suffuse the album.

Constantly jet-setting between Italy and the US, Millanta found music, food, and the mystical beauty of the moon to be universal connectors, bringing people together across oceans and borders. It was natural for her to combine both her cooking and her music in house concerts with dinner, which she began creating in Austin in 2017. As word spread, demand grew for her culinary live music events, and thus came the idea to release both a new album and cookbook together.

Blending elements of smoke-laced folk and drifting alt-rock, “Fatale” opens on eerie, magical tones flowing into a shadowy melody featuring washes of wavering guitars, infusing the tune with ghostly surfaces. The mid-tempo beat gives the song a sinister, swaying motion. Smoldering strings add to the feeling of imminent intimacy, an intimacy with a vitality of its own.

Millanta’s vocals, akin to a moody Medusa, imbue the lyrics with spinetingling and haunting timbres. It’s a voice at once exotically sensuous and wickedly risky, projecting the sensation of brooding absorption with opaque, secret emotions.

The combination of spectral, lo-fi textures and the voluptuous complexity of the voice of Giulia Millanta impart “Fatale” with proximate, luscious ruin.
