Alt-pop singer-songwriter Rachael Sage introduces her reinterpretation of Yazoo’s classic, synth-pop song, “Only You,” first released in 1982. The track is lifted from Sage’s upcoming album, The Other Side.
Her 15th album, The Other Side follows a series of albums released by Sage since founding her label MPress Records. Based in New York City, Sage has shared the stage with Ani DiFranco, Beth Hart, Howard Jones, and Grammy® winners Shawn Colvin and Judy Collins.
Along with winning six Independent Music Awards, Sage has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, and SXSW, and toured globally from Japan to Berlin with her band, The Sequins. Sage is also a visual artist and former ballet dancer who performed with the New York City Ballet. In addition, she is a philanthropic advocate who has raised money for a wide range of causes, including WHY Hunger, American Refugee Committee, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, and National Network For Youth (NN4Y).
“Only You” opens on raw, crunching percussion flowing into low-slung, gleaming tones revealing a rootsy, string-laced melody. Sage’s rich, silky voice imbues the lyrics with tender warmth, at once delicate and evocative. The feel and flow of the harmonics give the tune a mood of quixotic flair, gentle, charming, and oh-so-alluring, especially the delicious brass accents.
“Want you near me / All I needed was the love you gave / All I needed for another day / And all I ever knew / Only you.”
Speaking about the video, Sage shares, “Making the ‘Only You’ video with Beacon, NY-based filmmaker Jon Slackman was such a fun and cathartic experience, because it was an opportunity to really share my creative space Upstate in an authentic and relaxed way. The song has been one of my favorites for my whole life, and I’ve recently become a part of the Hudson Valley community and been so inspired by the artists – painters, musicians, and writers among them – who have truly embraced me and made me feel incredibly welcome. Basically, this video is a ‘slice of life’ showing me recording in my closet, rehearsing in my living room, and generally dancing around like no one is watching…except you!”
Rachael Sage offers an enchanting, gratifying reimagining of “Only You,” infusing the song with sparkling, velvety essence and vibrant elegance.
