Singer-songwriter Samar in Silence drops her latest single, “Burden,” a track from her forthcoming album, This Is Not Normal. “Burden” exposes the visceral emotions of betrayal and heartbreak.
Samar in Silence explains, “‘Burden’ is the most personal song I’ve written so far, and it’s the foundation of my upcoming album. I created it two years ago when I was going through an incredibly tough situation with a friend. This person portrayed themselves as a safe space — someone I could confide in who made me feel truly cared for. Out of nowhere, they told me that I was a burden to them. That moment shook me to my core. It was as if everything I thought I knew about our relationship was turned upside down, leaving me reeling.”
“Burden” follows on the heels of the recently released “Jungle,” a song that explores the mazes of the mind, where over analysis results in Alice in Wonderland-like rabbit holes of muddled thought.
In 2021, Samar in Silence released her debut singles, “Energy” and “All I Know,” followed by a series of singles. In 2024, she released her debut album, Delusional, featuring “Still Hung Up” and “Oh Well.” On her upcoming sophomore album, she explores inner shadowy emotions while seeking the flickering light in the far distance.
“Burden” opens on rounded, shimmering tones topped by Samar’s deliciously unique vocals, edgy yet nuanced by voluptuous timbres and her distinctive phrasing. It’s a phrasing that’s lightly pared and then extends into supple sonic filaments.
“You gave me all these promises / That I fully trusted / You gave me reassurance / Even though I didn’t ask for it / You said you’d always be there / That you weren’t going anywhere / But you left me at my lowest.”
An undulating, syncopated rhythm imbues the tune with a swaying motion, followed by a seductive psychedelic interlude topped by swirling harmonies.
Mingling tints of soul, R&B, and pop, “Burden” synthesizes the three flavors into a remarkably mesmerizing pop tune.
