Brooklyn’s ethereal goth and dark dream-pop outfit Silent Mass releases their new single, “The Great Chaos, a track from their forthcoming album set for release on the Summer Solstice, June 20, 2024.
Frontwoman Ammo shares, “‘The Great Chaos’ finds beauty in the spiral of self-discovery. It’s a love song about mourning a version of your past self.”
Silent Mass first arrived as the solo project of Ammo Bankoff, who released her debut single, a cover of “Total Recall,” in 2020, via Dune Altar as part of the compilation Doy You Feel That Way Too? A Tribute to Adrian Borland & The Sound.
Soon after, she relocated with audio engineer and guitarist Robert Duncan to join drummer and producer Alex Posell in New York City.
Silent Mass’ sound blends unforgettable vocals, lush guitars, and primal rhythms into a sound vaguely reminiscent of Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, Cocteau Twins, and Slowdive, yet wholly different. Silent Mass has shared the stage with occult rockers True Widow and played NYC’s five-day New Colossus Festival.
“The Great Chaos” opens on eerie, chiming colors that drift and sway as Ammo’s haunting, Siren-like vocals imbue the lyrics with dreamy, spectral tones. Primordial percussion gives the rhythm an intuitive feel, dark and mysterious.
As the melody takes on resonance, Ammo’s ghostly voice, rounded by smooth edges, immerses the tune in wraithlike textures, airy and translucent. The atmosphere created by this wickedly delicate, otherworldliness drips with shadows that hover and swirl.
With “The Great Chaos,” Silent Mass compels listeners to confront an avant-garde, breathtaking, almost supernatural sensation.
