Sophie B. Hawkins Releases ‘Whaler – Re-Emerging’

Grammy-nominated artist Sophie B. Hawkins celebrates the 30th anniversary of her album, Whaler, with the release of her new project, Whaler – Re-Emerging.

Hawkins shares, “The songs on this album are some of the sweetest and ripest I’ve yet written. They fill me with hope and joy. ‘WHALER’ was, and is again, a time of ‘True Romance’ in my life. We rehearsed these songs live in front of you on tour, just Seth and me. Soon after, we recorded the album in two days with Andrew Oedel at Ghost Hit Recording in Massachusetts. My voice is as raw as raw can be, no tuning or corrections, and I think the raw and unfiltered me is the best me. Please enjoy this wonderful and alive art. It’s a privilege to share it with you. I’m grateful you care about it.”

In 1992, Hawkins released her debut album, Tongues And Tails, featuring “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover,” followed by Whaler, with “As I Lay Me Down,” and “Right Beside You.” Since then, Hawkins has released seven albums – revealing the evolution of her sound and her authenticity.

Highlights on Whaler – Re-Emerging include the opening track, “Right Beside You,” featuring Hawkins’ delicious, slightly raspy vocals and soft, glowing vocal harmonies that give the tune depth and dimension.

A personal favorite because of its elegant piano-laced intro and rippling flow, “Did We Not Choose Each Other” displays the warmth and charming timbres of Hawkins’ voice, ranging from a whisper to more urgent tones.

The feel and flow of “As I Lay Me Down,” low-slung and lullaby-like, with hints of optimism, is all Hawkins and her luscious, gritty voice. There’s a wonderful delicacy to this stripped-down version of the song.

On “I Need Nothing Else,” Hawkins displays an evocative passion that reaches into your chest and touches your heart. Hawkins’ uniquely chafing voice imbues the lyrics with the rubbing, longing surfaces of overwhelming love.

Sophie B. Hawkins’ voice is as strong and appealing as ever, allowing her to reimagine her masterpiece with refreshing magic.
