Product Review: LEWITT DGT 650

Just a few short years ago, it was very difficult to buy affordable recording equipment that could be compared with professional equipment found exclusively in recording studios. Fast forward to the present – the wonderful people at LEWITT have released a game changer for musicians looking to achieve high quality results on the go while not breaking the bank. The LEWITT DGT 650 is a user friendly, versatile piece of equipment that combines a great microphone with an easy to use recording interface.

The DGT 650 is a stereo USB recorder with a built-in interface that is compatible with PC, MAC, and iOS devices. The unit offers 4 recording modes: Stereo Mode for live stereo recordings, Cardioid Mode for vocal recordings, Singer/Songwriter Mode which allows for microphone and line-in recordings recorded on separate tracks, and Stereo line in Mode, which bypasses the mic and allows for stereo line in operation. The user can choose from any of the settings with a simple flick of the switch on the on the microphone or even more conveniently using the free Control Center software. The Control Center – available on PC and Mac – allows remote control of all parameters from your host device. MIDI is also available in any of the 4 modes.

The microphone features 24 bit/96 kHz/110 dB dynamic range. It is a great quality and easily operable tool for the musician looking to record their live performances as well as the user looking to post great audio for YouTube videos and podcasts. The unit can be powered by either a USB port or by its rechargeable battery that can be used when using iOS devices on the go. The battery is a lithium-ion battery that has about a 3-hour battery life. While using for iOS devices, it has a battery saving feature that shuts the microphone off after a few minutes of inactivity.

Some feature highlights:

– 4 recording modes
– High pass filter to get rid of unwanted low frequencies
– Pre- attenuation used to prevent clipping
– Battery status light
