I’m BONZIE, an independent songwriter and musician. I love all kinds of music and am inspired by the concept of variety and dynamics— there should be no limits. Growing up, singer/songwriters like Judee Sill and Joni Mitchell really connected with me. I’ve released three full-length records and some singles. I’m now working on a fully self-produced full-length record to be released this year.
Tell us a little about your musical background; how old were you when you started playing guitar, and what inspired your musical desire?
I started playing guitar when I was 10. My parents were pretty against the idea of me starting on guitar so I had to prove to my mom that I was serious by having a stellar piano lesson where my teacher said I did well (which never happened because I hated lessons). I practiced all week and my teacher was shocked. My mom finally was okay with me starting on guitar. I started by teaching myself. I was so motivated from all the music I listened to, borderline obsessively. There was this thing called “hit clips” where you could buy little portions of songs to listen to. I listened to Madonna’s “Hollywood” hit clip until it wore out and wouldn’t play anymore. I just really loved music and songs.
Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
Inspiration is anything that moves me, or makes me think. I think a lot of things deserve a song.
What is your songwriting process?
My process changes depending on the song. I’ve approached it in a lot of ways. I think there are still more ways to play with approach and process, and I’m excited to try more. At the end of the day, it’s whatever facilitates the transfer of energy and emotion.
What’s your go-to guitar for songwriting?
My beautiful and earnest Martin OM that has been on many tours with me and multiple homes.
Music to me is…
A salve for life.
