Interview with Jim and Dara Crockett – Editors of ‘Guitar Player: The Inside Story’

Meet the man who, along with founder Bud Eastman, launched Guitar Player Magazine to the heights of the musical world.  Jim Crockett, along with his daughter Dara Crockett, are releasing their new book “Guitar Player: The Inside Story of the First Two Decades of the Most Successful Guitar Magazine Ever” published by Hal Leonard on March 9 with the foreward by Joe Satriani. The book tells the stories of the best guitar players of our times and shares insight into one of the first magazines to cover them. It’s a reflection on Guitar Player’s early founding in 1967 by Bud Eastman.

While at the recent NAMM convention in Anaheim, CA, we sat down with Mr. Crockett  and his daughter Dara and spoke with them about this great history and what inspired them to write this book.  It all started when Mr. Crockett at a very young age found himself unemployed and looking for his next opportunity, which in some uncanny way lied between the lines of a classified ad that he responded to, and the rest, as they say, is history.

It all started when Mr. Crockett at a very young age found himself unemployed and looking for his next opportunity, which in some uncanny way lied between the lines of a classified ad that he responded to, and the rest, as they say, is history. Dara reflected on the memories she had as a young girl hanging around the offices and watching some of the jam sessions at the warehouse which included visits from B.B. King, Chick Corea, Jerry Garcia, and Johnny Winter, to name a few.

Listen to this story as told by Crockett himself, with personal perspective from his daughter, and imagine the bold step out into the unknown he took way back then … and admire the awesome payback he received and the gift he gave to guitar lovers everywhere.
