Amythyst Kiah performed at the Newport Folk Festival and announces new tour dates

This weekend, Amythyst Kiah continued to prove why she’s poised to be one of the breakout talents of the year.

On Friday (7.23), Amythyst joined Brandi Carlile at Forest Hills Stadium. Performing the tracks from her latest album Wary + Strange, Amythyst led the crowd in what Carlile called a “spirit lifting set,” despite the travel delays and cancellations which left her band members stranded in Nashville. The show marked the first at the venue since the start of the pandemic.

On Sunday (7.25), Amythyst opened the “Once and Future Sounds” at Newport Folk Festival. Curated by her Our Native Daughters bandmate Allison Russell, Amythyst was among the “vital, predominantly black, and all-female roots-music voices” that “[redefined] the legacies of the festival’s past while expanding the possibilities for its future” (Rolling Stone). To cap the festival, Amythyst joined the all-star lineup during the final number, where the iconic Chaka Khan led a performance of her hit, “I’m Every Woman.” Check out a clip of the performance here.

This past weekend’s performances are just the latest achievements in Amythyst’s monumental year, which includes her national TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live, three 2021 Americana Music Award nomination (tying Jason Isbell as the most nominated artist of the year), her Grand Ole Opry debut, and praise from The New York TimesNPRPitchfork, Variety, American Songwriter, Billboard and many others.
