Lang’s positive attitude towards her own battle with breast cancer gives hope to others dealing with similar situations. In a recent Q&A session, Kelly Lang shared insights into the inspiration behind “Dragonfly.”
“Most every time I would be quiet and had my fingers in the air, a dragonfly would literally land on me and stay for several minutes.”
Tell us about the inspiration behind your new single, “Dragonfly.”
My inspiration behind the song “Dragonfly” began when swimming in my pool. Most every time I would be quiet and had my fingers in the air, a dragonfly would literally land on me and stay for several minutes. It is such a phenomenon that when I began to share the pics with friends on socials, several people began sending me more and more things with dragonflies on them (coffee cups, jewelry, clothes, pillows, etc.). As I began to come up with the perfect title for this album, the name Dragonfly kept coming to mind. I realized I needed to write a song entitled the same to fit within the project.
What was the songwriting and recording process?
Writing the song “Dragonfly” was very difficult…I mean, what can you possibly say about an insect? However, being that they are such a spiritual creature, I decided the music needed to be innocent and childlike. The lyrics are so simple, very elementary, while the melody is a bit more orchestrated, making it a dreamy sensation for the listener. I’ve been told that this song elicits calmness and comfort, and that makes me so happy as the writer. Recording this was really fun. I am not the best pianist, but I did my best to put my melody down on my voice recorder on my phone, and thank goodness my friend Buddy Hyatt was able to hear through what I brought him, and he helped me orchestrate the music I heard in my head to record the soundtrack. The biggest compliment I have received on the song came from Chip Davis, my background vocalist. He honestly thought I had co-written this with the great Sir Barry Gibb! Wow, what wonderful company to be mentioned in.
Is there a particular lyric that speaks to you?
I wanted this song to also be a song about a lost love, so the lyric, “can you bring my love to me in dreams tonight?” really brings a loneliness and longing from the singer’s point of view.
The music video is so beautiful and ethereal. How was the filming for the video done?
Thank you for the compliment on the video! I so enjoyed being a part of the creative process on this. I wanted the feeling to be mystical and ethereal. We picked the perfect mature treed spot near a beautiful creek to encompass the feeling of a magical forest. I hope the viewer can be transported to an enchanted wonderland while watching and listening to my new song, “Dragonfly.”
What do you hope your fans/listeners take away with them when they listen to your music?
My hope is that the listener can find comfort and a peaceful feeling when they hear this new music I’ve created.
With “Dragonfly,” she has undoubtedly achieved that and so much more.
