S.G. Goodman queer indie rocker from Kentucky releases “Teeth Marks” – powerful sophomore album out today via Verve Forecast

June 3, 2022 – Today, indie rocker S.G. Goodman releases her highly anticipated sophomore album Teeth Marks via Verve Forecast. The stunning album tackles issues such as homophobia, the opioid epidemic, mental health and workers rights, with Goodman’s singular gritty indie-rock sound and haunting voice, cementing her as one of the most exciting acts out of the South. Listen to the album here https://sg-goodman.lnk.to/TeethMarks. Check out S.G. Goodman’s D2C store for an exclusive Ruby colored vinyl LP offering and more.

Also released today is a gripping music video for the two-song climactic opus “If You Were Someone I Loved” and “You Were Someone I Loved,” which explores the lack of human empathy surrounding the opioid crisis from two points of view: an average on-looker who might not care, and the mother of a forgotten victim of the crisis. The video, directed by Meredith Truax, is in two parts, embracing the rock n’ roll and the Applachian influences that Goodman weaves elegantly in her work. Recently on tour opening for Son Volt and Jason Isbell, Goodman will continue touring across the US, with headline dates including June 4 at the Blue Room at Third Man Records in Nashville and June 7 at New York City’s Mercury Lounge. She then tours with John Moreland throughout August, before continuing her headline tour with dates in Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Boston and more. See dates below.

With a southern twang and tailor made suit, which evokes a rock and roll demeanor somewhere between Patti Smith and Tony Joe White, Goodman is not your average indie rocker.

Raised in Western Kentucky on the Mississippi River Delta, in a strict church going family, Goodman went from singing in church three times a week to a prominent, politically active member of the Murray, KY indie rock scene. Her critically acclaimed Jim James produced debut, Old Time Feeling drew attention from The Fader, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, NPR, and PBS Newshour, and many more.

Mining garage rock, Appalachian folk and post-punk influence, Goodman’s sophomore album Teeth Marks finds her stirring vocals and emotionally astute songwriting draped in a sonic patchwork of southern indie rock. Exploring her embodied trauma of coming out as gay to her Southern Baptist rural community, and the homophobic prejudice and ostracization, that has continued to follow her to this day.

She explores how this kind of trauma will log-jam in the body, alongside examining the opioid crisis, queer dating and unrequited love. Across all 11 tracks the central concept of the indelible mark that love leaves behind, is present. From lovingly confronting a self-destructive alcoholic friend, to confronting herself in the face of unrequited love. A landmark release from one of the most impassioned and idiosyncratic voices of this generation, it will cement her as one of the most exciting acts emerging from the South in many years.
