Product Review: Fender Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang®

As seen in Guitar Girl Magazine Issue 19 – Spring 2022

In 1993, at the height of the grunge music period, famous Nirvana guitarist/front man Kurt Cobain teamed up with the Fender custom shop to create a hybrid of his two favorite guitars, the Jaguar and the Mustang and created the all original Jag-Stang. With the 30th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind album release in 2021, Fender brought back the famed model for a limited reissue release. The new reissue guitars are made with Alder bodies (the original bodies were made of basswood) and come in Fiesta Red or Sonic Blue. Both colors are available in left and right-handed models.

In 1993, while Cobain worked with Fender to create this new hybrid guitar, great detail and unique features went into its design, and the reissue covers all those bases. The unique offset body, the 24” short scale fingerboard, and the 7.25” radius C-neck make this guitar very comfortable to play, especially for players with smaller hands. The vintage-style single-coil pickup and the custom humbucker bridge pickup allow this guitar to be dialed in for an array of unique sounds.

This guitar covers it all from crisp, clean chords to heavy, full grunge chord sounds. The Jag-Stang features the slider switches from the Mustang model, and those allow the player to dial in four unique settings to create some rich, in and out-of-phase tones. Rounding out the coolness of this guitar is the Fender barrel-style floating bridge and dynamic tailpiece that add beauty and function to this unique, classic style guitar.

Many considered Kurt Cobain to be a great innovator of music, and his innovation lives on today through this unique guitar.
