Indie alternative artist Alemeda drops her debut EP, FK IT, via Top Dawg Entertainment and Warner Records. An innovative amalgamation of pop, rock, and punk, FK IT features sugar-rush hooks that make Alemeda’s songs oh-so addictive.
Talking about the EP, Alemeda “This EP is the truest expression of who I am right now. It’s about letting go of what doesn’t serve me and embracing the chaos and beauty of being real, unapologetically.”
Hailing from Ethiopia, Alemeda grew up between Ethiopia and Arizona. Raised in a household with strict rules, including the restriction of music and television, Alemeda discovered music by secretly listening to her family’s clock-radio.
In 2021, she dropped her debut single, “Gonna Bleach My Eyebrows,” amassing more than 12 million streams. In 2022, Alemeda released “Post Nut Clarity,” which went on to collect over 3 million streams on Spotify.
Encompassing eight tracks, entry points on FK IT include “I Hate Your Face,” a swaying alt-pop tune of deliciously swirling tones topped by Alemeda’s uniquely flavored, seductive voice. A personal favorite because of its dreamy R&B intro, “Guys Girl” flows into a shimmering, lustrous pop melody with hints of rock infusing it with heavier textures and energy. The feel and mood of the tune supplies warm, sparkling motion.
“Already Dug Your Grave,” a glittering, pop-rock banger, surges with brilliant, throbbing movement as Alemeda’s smooth yet smoky vocals capture the essence of the potent, gleaming music. The contagious rippling flow of “Gonna Bleach My Eyebrows,” with its bedroom pop rhythmic pulse, and tints of lo-fi, house, and R&B savors, hits the sonic bull’s eye dead center – a song dripping with confidence and independence.
“Not Asking For Much” reveals alt-country surfaces with tangs of pop, resulting in a marvelously wistful tune that showcases Alemeda’s exquisitely nuanced vocals. Glowing vocal harmonies expand the song’s depth and dimension, giving it a luscious, drifting movement.
With FK IT, Alemeda eludes subservience to the music industry’s dictates and makes superb music on her own terms.
