Kat Von D Releases Sophomore Album ‘My Side of the Mountain’

Multi-talented singer, songwriter, and artist Kat Von D unveils her second long player, My Side of the Mountain, along with announcing upcoming tour dates. The tour kicks off with two shows in the Midwest at the end of October.

With her unique, alluring ‘80s sound, a blend of disco goth, synthwave, new wave, and post-punk, as well as lyrical motifs about love, vulnerability, and mistiness, Kat’s music reveals a hypnotic charm that’s simultaneously bewitching and seductively momentous.

Along with being a tour de force musical talent, Kat Von D has established a beauty kingdom, starred in television shows, written best-selling books, and transformed the tattoo industry. Her music has been featured in elite media outlets, receiving high praise.

Encompassing a dozen tracks, entry points on My Side of the Mountain include “Dead,” a retro-flavored synth-pop tune that slowly escalates harmonically and rhythmically to a dazzling song dripping with longing.

A personal favorite because of its sensuous bassline and hints of funk-lite, “Vampire Love” glows and undulates on a slinky motion. Kat’s supple, nuanced vocals imbue the lyrics with haunting desire and need.

Dark and sultry, “Truth In Reverse” rides a thumping rhythm topped by Kat’s sensual vocals, oozing shadowy timbres and a smoky richness. On the chorus, beckoning tones give the melody a voluptuous swaying movement.

“I Am A Machine,” featuring Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy, rumbles with muscular strength, a strength juxtaposed against the luminous vocals. This duality of textures infuses the tune with thick, trembling dynamics.

With its liquid, drifting sensation, “Running Away” shifts, bends, and leans on creeping surfaces. Whereas the dance-pop hum of “With You” offers a pushing rhythm of shimmering colors atop a fat bassline.

The Latin-laced flow of “Por Ti,” sung in Spanish, forms a seductive song full of quixotic savors. Kat’s version of Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself” ties the album off, exuding an atmosphere of melancholy akin to a prayer for companionship.

Highlighted by the gothic, Siren-like voice of Kat Von D, with its syrupy, erotic timbres, My Side of the Mountain hits the bull’s eye.
