Independent folk-pop artist Melissa D (Melissa Durkee Moorhouse) releases her new single, “Songbird,” a song that’s simultaneously a celebration of nature and recapturing one’s own voice.
Talking about the song’s inspiration, Melissa D says, “This track was inspired by a wood thrush and a series of experiences in my life during 2023. I spent a lot of time sitting on my deck, watching birds gather at the feeder and fly overhead. Around that same time, I visited Rockwell Retreat, the home where Norman Rockwell lived and created his work from 1939–1953.
“I was experiencing burnout and trying to survive in a world that has always felt like a dress two sizes too small and the wrong color. Somewhere along the way, I had forgotten to take care of myself, to honor my gifts, and to actually ENJOY my life. Writing this song became a cathartic release.”
A classically trained vocalist, Melissa D began her career in music fronting the rock band The Alley Katz, followed by collaborating on the folk-rock project CHILL. In 2016, she went solo, releasing music from her home in New England.
Her music has been featured on Vermont Public, Women of Substance Radio, and Sip-N-Stream. Her song “Little Girl” earned a nomination for Best Song of America (American Roots) at the 2021 InterContinental Music Awards.
Produced by Colin McCaffrey, “Songbird” includes Melissa D (vocals) and Marianne Donahue Perchlik (backing vocals). Cover art by Jason Bernis.
“Songbird” rolls out on a soft, mid-tempo rhythm topped by acoustic guitars, a banjo, and a fiddle. At once evocative and elevating, there’s a gentle, gleaming glow running through the melody that delivers hints of feel-good flavors. Folk, pop, and country surfaces combine to make the tune appealing and easy to listen to.
Rife with luscious sonic brushstrokes, rich textures, and blending colors, “Songbird” is wonderfully warm and inviting.
