Music Video Premiere: Cashavelly Morrison Unveils Haunting “Badlands”

Folk/Americana artist Cashavelly Morrison introduces the visuals for “Badlands,” a track lifted from her upcoming album, METAMORPHOSIS, slated for release October 1.

Talking about the album, and the self-examination inspiring it, Cashavelly says, “It was time to step off the path that was paved by family and culture and step into the dark woods where there’s no trail. The pain of keeping all my bullshit down began to outweigh the pain it would take to finally bring it out. Once you don’t take your own bullshit you won’t take anyone else’s either and you are fucking golden ‘cause you are prepared to lose everything to live authentically.”

Recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, North Carolina, the album mirrors the wild audacity of artists such as Joanna Newsom, Iron & Wine, Gillian Welch, Fiona Apple, and War on Drugs. Along with the album, Cashavelly wrote a screenplay for a feature film to complement the album. She co-produced, co-directed, choreographed, and stars in the film, which probes the seeming separation of spirit and ego.

As well as being called an ‘Artist You Need to Know’ by Rolling Stone, Cashavelly received an Independent Music Award for Best Alternative Country Album, followed by an appearance on NPR’s Mountain Stage.

Cashavelly’s band includes the musical gifts of Ryan MacLeod, Luke Payne, John Daniel Ray, Kevin Beck, and Chaisaray Schenck.

“Badlands” travels on a low-slung, softly gleaming guitar topped by Cashavelly’s haunting, crème de la crème voice, burnished by echoing, subtle textures. It’s a grand, evocative voice, at once alluring and pervaded by longing tones.

A finessed rhythm imbues the tune with an indulgent rumbling cadence as shimmering guitars glide overhead. As exquisite as the music is, Cashavelly’s bravura voice is the highlight of the song, offering nuanced timbres under superb lilting control.

Cashavelly Morrison has it going on. Simultaneously tantalizing, spectral, and wistful, “Badlands” is ineffably marvelous.
