Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Taylor Jules introduces her new single/music video, “19,” the second track from her upcoming EP.
Taylor shares, “‘19’ is about enjoying that special time in your life when you have endless possibilities, you have the world in the palm of your hand, and just about anything seems possible. It’s about being young and carefree and yourself. Like the song says, ‘when you’re 19, summers last forever, things keep getting better…’ The vision of your future is shaped by this hope and naiveté. I wanted to capture the feeling I had at 19 juxtaposed with the reality and disillusion you feel when growing older. For those of us on the other side of 19, there’s a nostalgia to driving around alone or with your friends, dreaming of the night ahead.”
Born and raised on the Westside of L.A., Taylor began performing when she was five years old. Later, she landed the lead vocalist position in a notable musical program, followed by performing across the U.S. for four years. By the age of 13, she had shared the stage with artists like Jackson Browne, Robbie Kreiger (The Doors), Dale Crover (the Melvins), and Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses), along with appearing on the Russell Brand show and the Heidi and Frank show on KLOS radio.
All the while, Taylor kept her artistic endeavors secret from her school peers, who ridiculed her ability to sing. At the same time, after years of painful physical symptoms, Taylor was finally diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, amplified pain syndrome, and later Fibromyalgia.
Refusing to allow her physical burdens to limit her, Taylor embraced her challenges and used her music as a means to relate and connect to others. Through sharing her story, she hopes to empower others.
“19” opens on soft, flowing tones drenched in sweeping, evocative strings. Taylor’s silky, gorgeous voice imbues the lyrics with tender, warm timbres, giving the song passion and wistful savors. Nuanced and under exquisite control, it’s a voice both plush and wide-ranging, dripping with enchanting sonic fragrances.
The video depicts Taylor alone in a pink convertible, driving through the night, visually mirroring the feeling of the music.
Taylor Jules more than delivers on “19.” Laced by velvety smooth vocals and poignant harmonics, “19” reveals the freedom of youth.
