Americana singer-songwriter Rebekah Gilbert unveils her latest single, “Secret Keeper,” the title track from her upcoming EP, which narrates the passage from silence to self-liberation.
According to Gilbert, “’Secret Keeper’ is an incredibly personal song and the title track of my EP—a collection of seven songs that explore the weight of secrets, the grip of addiction, the pull of generational cycles, the fragility of relationships, and the persistence of dreams. I co-wrote it with Keri Wooster after a powerful conversation about what it means to carry childhood secrets into adulthood. This song is about that turning point—realizing we no longer have to bear the silence or the shame.”
“Secret Keeper” follows on the heels of “Somebody Else’s House,” co-written with Amanda Williams. Flavored with tints of blues and country, “Somebody Else’s House” was inspired by the secret double life of a forebearer.
While “Somebody Else’s House” delves into yesteryear, “Secret Keeper” is introspective, almost confessional yet at the same time more – a restoration of self through emotional healing.
Gilbert sings: “If I tell the truth, will I be free? / Or do I lock it up and hide the key?”
Produced by Nicole Witt, musicians appearing on “Secret Keeper” include Jimbo Hart (bass), Sol Philcox-Littlefield (guitar), Grayson Wright (keys), Jon Davis {drums), Nicole Witt on violin and background vocals, and Austin Motlow (recording, mixing).
A gorgeous, dreamy intro immediately infuses “Secret Keeper” with gentle warmth, beckoning listeners into an intimate milieu. The swaying, country-pop melody evokes sighs of a wistful nature mitigated by lyrics conveying the wonderful catharsis of letting go.
Gilbert’s exquisite voice imbues the lyrics with passion and the latent power of revelation. The exposure of buried feelings to the remedy of light sets things right.
“Secret Keeper” finds Rebekah Gilbert reaching deep inside her soul and laying out what she found via her haunting vocals.
