Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Taylor Jules releases her latest EP, The Good The Bad and The Ugliest, produced in collaboration with Stefan Lit (Andy Grammer, One Direction) and Dylan Chambers.
The Good The Bad and The Ugliest delves into the numerous emotional layers discovered in modern relationships, while simultaneously exploring personal growth, interlacing moments of openness and resilience. Throughout the EP, Taylor reveals authentic feelings as she confronts life’s conflicts and the subtle, in-between experiences that ultimately shape our identity.
The EP opens with “All Time Low,” a darkly thrumming tune vaguely reminiscent of Linda Ronstadt, not only harmonically but because of Jules’ wickedly evocative vocals – potent and oh-so expressive with raw yet polished timbres.
“All time low, I’m at an / I don’t want them to know / All time low I’m drowning all my hopes I’m dying / I don’t want them to know.”
On “Every Little Moment,” Jules takes listeners back to the ‘60s via a thick and creamy melody with shiny piano accents, sighing vocal harmonies, and a lusciously swaying, earworm of a rhythm. The bassline, along with the flat, thumping percussion, infuses the rhythm with an addictive cadence. This track is a personal favorite because of its nostalgic effect.
“Real Love” features a light, funky rhythm topped by delicious layers of soulful surfaces highlighted by Jules’ smoky, passionate vocals. According to Jules, “This song is about my guy friend and the moment I finally stopped denying I liked him.”
“The one that I’ve been hiding from / What am I afraid of? / Tell me why, why do I / Always run away from your love?”
“Sage Advice,” a blend of R&B and soul flavors, allows Jules to parade the range and emotional scope of her amazing voice – shifting from low and sultry to soaring and intense. It’s one of those rich, vibrant voices that display profound emotions with compelling flair.
Alongside production that’s wonderfully appealing, the best part of The Good The Bad and The Ugliest is the bravura voice of Taylor Jules.
