Music Premiere: Singer-songwriter Abby Shreve depicts the vulnerability of mental illness in debut single “Misery”

Rising superstar, Abby Shreve, brings contagious and unique vibes as she aspires to prove that an artist shouldn’t be boxed into one genre, and hopes her passion for music is reflected through her songs. Today, exclusively on Guitar Girl Magazine, you can listen to Abby Shreve’s debut single, “Misery.”

When asked about the inspiration behind the single, Shreve shares, “Behind smoke and mirrors, the purpose of music is to express stories and feelings. ‘Misery’ was written to express a time in my life when I felt lost and confused within my own mind. My hope is for anyone who relates to the lyrics to feel less alone, and know that there is always help and beauty on the other side.”

Born in Kenosha, WI, now residing in Atlanta, GA, Abby has been training a range of genres since an early age, preparing her to realize a long time dream of releasing music as a singer/songwriter. Furthermore, at the age of 15, Shreve auditioned for American Idol and successfully advanced past the first round. She placed in scholarship competitions throughout her teenage years in Southeast WI, and in 2016, toured Europe with a state-wide choir, being highlighted as the group’s female soloist. Abby has also sung the National Anthem solo for many sports groups such as the Milwaukee Bucks. In college, she earned a degree in Vocal Performance and Music Industry at UW-Oshkosh. Shreve trained in a wide variety of genres, such as opera and musical theater, and received accolades in Wisconsin-wide Collegiate scholarship competitions as well as winning her university Music Department Honor Recital. Shreve also performed briefly in a hard rock band “Utopia Rising” throughout her college career.

Gifted with luscious vocals and incredible vibrato, this breakout star has grown into a multi-faceted performer. Her influences range from classic rock artists such as Stevie Nicks and Freddie Mercury, to current trailblazing songwriters such as Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson.

Abby Shreve’s debut single “Misery” is truly something special. In this upcoming single, Shreve explores the idea of feeling lost and needing help from someone because their hope is being lost. This song will truly transport the audience into the moments in their lives where they felt more lost, increasing their connection to the song and, also, showing them that we all feel differently in moments of “misery.” Additionally, Abby’s soft vocals help her share her message smoothly, making the audience feel drawn to her voice as she makes us contemplate what “misery” is and the meaning it has for each of us, as she shares what misery feels like to her. The depiction of mental illness that Shreve provides in this song is raw, emotional, and at the same time beautiful – a true reflection of how many of us have felt in times of loneliness and despair.
