Bella Moulden, a native of Buffalo, NY, currently residing in Belmont, NC, is an exceptional artist with a distinctive style and a genre-blurring approach to music. Not only does she have a soulful, unique voice, but her instrumental skills are undeniable. From bass and electric guitar to percussion, ukulele, and keyboard, Bella has mastered a diverse range of instruments, beginning her musical journey at 9. The guitar, especially the electric and bass, is her forte, and she occasionally wields a double-neck 4/6 guitar.

Tell us about the inspiration behind your new music.
My latest creation, “Season of the Witch,” is a witchy, danceable anthem tailor-made for the enchanting season. It’s a nostalgic journey back to the late ’70s and early ’80s, blending glam rock and soul fusion elements. The song is a sonic delight, driven by the power of the theremin, electrifying guitar, the bass on the drums, and the sizzling synth, taking listeners on a mesmerizing journey through a world of enchanting grooves. The song will make you want to cast a spell! The song was inspired by the original Hocus Pocus. The song is about a woman depicted as a villain in a man’s world. Also very heavily inspired by Medusa, as well. I wanted to make a song that sounded like it would be played in a witchy movie! Perhaps in the near future, it will be. In the meantime, my fans are really enjoying the new version of what was once a mere demo.
What was the songwriting and recording process?
For this song in particular, from the beginning, I created the instrumental pieces first — then I translated the instruments into words, creating the lyrics. The demo that came before for this song was written and produced on my bedroom floor on a 09′ iMAC from my childhood two years ago on Garageband. It was created after I rewatched the original Hocus Pocus the same night.
The new one was produced at my new desk on Logic! I also independently produced, mixed, and mastered this track. I added more instrumental layers, lyrics, and vocals — making the song sound fuller, and giving it a more of that enchanting feel. The process certainly depends on what I feel first. Sometimes, the lyrics come to me before the melody.
What do you hope your fans/listeners take away when listening to your music?
I hope they take away with them what they need. Art is always up for interpretation, even if the artist establishes what it was meant for. Sometimes, the purpose of the creator creating the piece is not the same as the purpose of fans/listeners listening. That is okay, and I just hope whatever it is they need from it, they take. My music is at the listener’s disposal. Feel what you feel.
When did you first pick up the guitar, and what drew you to that instrument?
I first picked up the guitar around 15 years of age. I started with the acoustic and slowly went into electric oblivion at the age of 17 — getting my first electric guitar. At this time, I was already playing keyboard, percussion, and ukulele…I felt there were a few more instruments missing. The acoustic did not do it for me; I wanted to shred! I wanted to rock! All the songs I grew up trying to learn were rock songs; I was always frustrated because when I played them on the ukulele and keyboard, it did not sound as cool. I did not let anything stop me from wanting to play the music I wanted to play, so I taught myself. Now, no matter what genre, I can play it the way I want to. Haven’t stopped rocking out since! Guitar is my favorite and the coolest instrument.
Speaking of instruments, what brand do you play and why?
I play Kramer, Epiphone, and mostly Gibson brand guitars! I have a great relationship with Gibson, and their guitars are phenomenal. For my keys, I am a Roland gal. Mics? Shure and AKG. I use JBL and KRK equipment, too. I have a great relationship with Harman as well — their equipment is fantastic! Drums? Alesis. Pedals? Donner, Walrus Audio, Boss, Azure…ETC.
Who are some of your musical influences?
My musical influences are Stevie Nicks, Hendrix, Bowie, and Prince! They all played an integral part in my music journey, from my style to the way I create.
Will you be touring in support of your new music?
Touring can be tough when you aren’t signed; however, I have and will be playing a few shows here and there before the end of this year! Very excited to meet more of my fans in person and have more great shows!
