SANTA MONICA, Calif. (August 17, 2018) — The Recording Academy™ Producers & Engineers Wing® recently held four “Craft Session” events featuring intimate conversations with prominent producers, engineers, and songwriters.
On June 12, 2018, in Philadelphia, the Academy’s Philadelphia Chapter held “Craft Session with Ann Mincieli.” Mincieli, a GRAMMY®-winning engineer and owner of New York’s Jungle City Studios, was interviewed by David Weiss – engineer, writer, and founder of the popular music and audio website SonicScoop. The conversation focused on how to capture performances – the technical, creative and psychological work that goes into getting magic moments recorded. To demonstrate, Mincieli described two recordings that highlighted unique captures – Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” and “Illusion of Bliss” – walking the audience through the various steps of recording these tracks, along with a discussion of her collection of vintage guitar amps and effects.
On June 13, “Craft Session with Linda Perry” was held at The Tracking Room in Nashville, presented by the Academy’s Nashville Chapter. Nashville P&E Wing Co-Chair Kevin Kadish moderated a conversation with Songwriter Hall of Fame inductee Linda Perry, who spoke about her early experiences as frontwoman for 4 Non-Blondes and her songwriting and artist development process with P!nk, Christina Aguilera and James Blunt.
“Craft Session: Demystifying Mastering” also took place on June 13 at The Heights Theater in Houston. Presented by the Academy’s Texas Chapter, the session was a technical dive with three prominent mastering engineers from around the country: Chris Athens (GRAMMY winner and current Austin, TX resident), Kim Rosen (GRAMMY-nominated owner of New Jersey’s Knack Mastering), and Piper Payne (owner/chief engineer at Neato Mastering in the San Francisco Bay Area). Moderated by noted mix engineer Tim Palmer, the conversation ranged through file formats, compression issues, overall level and more. Also joining the discussion was Gebre Waddell, current Memphis Chapter President and co-founder/CEO of audio technology company Soundways. Waddell, author of Complete Audio Mastering: Practical Techniques, shared news about the launch of Soundways’ new music crediting website, SoundCredit.com. Having first created a cross-platform plug-in to collect credits that uses the DDEX RIN metadata standard, Soundways has now expanded to include an online portal for documenting and publishing recording credits.
On July 25, the Academy’s New York Chapter hosted “Craft Session with St. Vincent” at the legendary Electric Lady Studios. The evening began with a conversation between St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) and GRAMMY® Award-winning mix engineer Tom Elmhirst that ranged from her approaches to songwriting and producing to her experiences working with noted producer Jack Antonoff. She also spoke about her relationship with Ernie Ball Music Man and the development of her own signature line of guitars. The evening concluded with an acoustic performance by St. Vincent.
The P&E Wing is planning more “Craft Sessions” throughout the remainder of 2018 – part of their comprehensive series of events centered around outreach and education for P&E Wing membership and the industry at large.
