December 6, 2023 – Today, Lizzie No (she/they) shares “Annie Oakley,” the latest single from their new album Halfsies, which drops January 19 via Thirty Tigers / Miss Freedomland. The darkly determined road song finds the album’s main character traveling through the heartland as she asks important questions about the choices she’s made.
Under The Radar shared the music video, saying “‘Annie Oakley’ is a stirring and cinematic effort, with No evoking a long lineage of stately heartland rock road songs…steady acoustic strums and marching drums propel the track forward at a steady clip as they are slowly joined by swells of distortion and country-tinged harmonies, lifting the track higher.”

“Most of the great songwriters in the Americana genre have darkly determined road songs featuring dirty motels, gas station coffee, the exhilaration of seeing America’s plains rushing toward them from behind a car windshield as if on a roller coaster designed by Willa Cather, bleak club shows, and tequila for dinner,” says No. “Behind the scenery are some difficult questions, like ‘why have I chosen to do this with my life?’ and ‘will I ever be one of the greats?’. Miss Freedomland also has to ask herself if deadbolting the motel door is enough, or if she should wedge a chair under the door handle as well. To get to the next level she must sing the new classics to her people. And carry a knife.”
“Annie Oakley” follows Lizzie No’s two previous singles, “The Heartbreak Store,” a “lovely little ballad” that was praised by Stereogum, and “Lagunita” feat. Brian Dunne, which was featured on Rolling Stone’s Songs You Need To Know. A fully immersive listening experience, Halfsies follows Miss Freedomland (a character representing both No and the audience) on a search for freedom from the depths of despair in an increasingly violent and nightmarish American landscape.
Lizzie No’s beautifully intricate songwriting blends together the political and personal as naturally as their patchwork of influences. Able to move frequently and seamlessly between overlapping musical circles, she has toured with Iron & Wine, Son Little and Adia Victoria,
and collaborated with Pom Pom Squad and Domino Kirke. Halfsies follows a dizzying five-year span that saw the release of two celebrated, eclectic albums, Hard Won and Vanity, in addition to No’s work as co-host of the Basic Folk podcast, where they have interviewed artists from Ben Harper to Valerie June to Kishi Bashi.
Next year, Lizzie No will hit the road on a coast-to-coast tour in support of the new album, kicking things off on January 19 in Brooklyn, before making stops in Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and more. See a full list of dates below or visit their
