Sue Foley is set to captivate audiences in Toronto with in-person media appearances on March 5.
In her latest acoustic solo endeavor, One Guitar Woman, Sue Foley embarks on a heartfelt journey to honor the legacy of female guitar legends. This album serves as a profound tribute to the women whose musical prowess and life stories have inspired generations. Foley, in her liner notes, expresses her admiration for these women, noting their immense talent, courage, and visionary contributions that have reshaped cultural narratives and the guitar’s history.
Staying true to the essence of the album’s title, Foley delivers each song with a singular guitar. Departing from her usual performances with “Pinky,” her cherished pink paisley Fender Telecaster, Foley opts for a nylon-string acoustic guitar for this project. This special instrument, a flamenco Blanca crafted by the esteemed luthier Salvadore Castillo, was acquired during a 2022 trip to Paracho, Mexico.
The album’s lead single, “Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie” by Elizabeth Cotten, is now available, showcasing Foley’s ability to capture the song’s essence while adding her unique vocal touch. Foley shares her enthusiasm for Cotten’s Piedmont fingerpicking style, highlighting the joy and satisfaction of mastering such a piece.
One Guitar Woman spans a diverse range of styles, paying homage to icons like Memphis Minnie, Maybelle Carter, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and others, including the classical prowess of Ida Presti and the Tejano rhythms of Lydia Mendoza. The album features twelve tracks that celebrate the contributions of eight remarkable female guitarists.
Foley’s artistry shines through in her original compositions, such as “Maybelle’s Guitar,” which weaves in Maybelle Carter’s iconic “Carter Scratch” style, and her bilingual rendition of Lydia Mendoza’s “Mal Hombre,” to which Foley adds her own English verse. Instrumental pieces like “Romance in A Minor” and “La Malagueña” further showcase Foley’s versatility and depth as a musician.
Set for a global release on March 29, 2024, via Stony Plain Records, One Guitar Woman is more than an album—it’s a celebration of female guitarists’ enduring influence. Foley is also preparing to debut her “One Guitar Woman” show, a solo performance featuring multimedia storytelling and music honoring these pioneering women, with select dates throughout 2024.
With thirteen albums and numerous awards to her name, including multiple Blues Music Awards for Traditional Female Artist of the Year—a title she won again in 2024—Foley continues to leave an indelible mark on the music world.
