Mae Graf Rocks Her Heart Out on “What abt me?”

Singer-songwriter Mae Graf releases her new single, “What abt me?,” a song exploring the emotional storm evoked by a lover’s betrayal. “What abt me?” follows on the heels of Graf’s previous singles, “Barbie” and “I Like Me Better This Way.”

Highlighted by Graf’s potent voice, vaguely reminiscent of Avril Lavigne. “What abt me?” reveals a deliciously compelling intensity, drenched in the passion of frustration and anger. Blending poignant heartache and the resulting longing to scream out with fury, “What abt me?” narrates a message to her former lover, who instilled in her the idea of undying love, only to betray her with another.

While growing up, Graf was surrounded by music. Her nanny sang with her, and they wrote songs together. Later, she took voice lessons, followed by participating in school performances.

Graf found emotional release through writing, including journaling and songwriting. Her sound mirrors visceral vulnerability, providing an intimate peek into her soul and experiences. Still in her teens, Graf’s influences include Gracie Adams and Taylor Swift. Yet it’s Graf’s unique, rasping voice that sets her music apart. It’s one of those voices dripping with efficacious immediacy, at once nuanced and electrifying.

“What abt me?” opens on flickering tones of alt-rock tinted with alt-pop flavors and then rolls into a tight, crunching rhythm that gives the tune a muscular feel. As the harmonics take shape and ramp-up to full dynamics, the song punches listeners in the torso with its affecting, cogent melody.

Graf belts out her deepest emotions: “Look at what you did to me / You took everything / My life, my heart, my ability to dream / It ended with a kiss on my cheek / You went and told me I was the prettiest girl that you had ever seen / What about me? / And what about all the things you said?”

The sturdy rhythmic flow contrasts with the piercing vocals of Mae Graf, infusing the song with a sense of building resentment throughout. Good stuff!
