Indie-pop singer-songwriter Emily Haber unveils her new EP, Nostalgia, reflecting themes of wistful melancholy, connection, hope, and the grief of losing her mother. The EP was produced by Grammy winner Daniel Dávila, who has worked with Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign, and Timbaland.
Haber grew up in a musical family. When she was six, her parents started a band named Laughing Pizza, which signed with Sony/Epic Records and toured across the U.S. and performed on PBS Kids.
Born with hearing loss, Haber performed with hearing aids that often failed mid-performance, leaving her reliant upon instinct and muscle memory. Advances in hearing technology allowed Haber to hear her own voice when she was 13. By age 17, she was able to hear the complexity of music for the first time.
Haber’s solo career began with the loss of her mother to cancer. When she was 19, Haber moved to Nashville, where an accidental meeting with Grammy-winning songwriter Liz Rose, turned out to be providential.
In 2017, Haber signed with Prescription Songs, leading to collaborating with Andy Grammer, Joy Oladokun, Anna Clendening, Gryffin, Abby Anderson, carobae, Miki Ratsula, Devon Gabriella, and Erika Jayne. Her songs received placement on television and film, including CNN, The Sex Lives of College Girls, The L Word, The Hills, Batwoman, and Teen Mom.
Encompassing five tracks, the EP begins with the title track, a tribute to the childhood she wanted but didn’t have. Haber’s gentle, almost whispery vocals imbue the lyrics with the aching longing of unfulfilled wishes.
Speaking subjectively, highlights include “Getting Older,” a low-slung tune with hints of edginess that give the song light tension. Haber’s vocals reveal an intimate understanding of emotional changes as people move through life. The lyrics echo feelings of sad regret.
The last track, “Next Time,” a personal favorite because of the delicate translucence of Haber’s vocals, balances on the edge of floating and gliding. Softly resonant, the harmonics flow forth on velvety, luminous tendrils, silhouetting Haber’s bewitching voice in an exquisite mist.
Highlighted by Emily Haber’s enchanting vocals, Nostalgia unearths the profound emotions of memories and lost innocence.
