Sarah Jarosz’s Undercurrent is Named Album of the Year at the International Folk Music Awards

Two-Time GRAMMY Winner Announces New Tour Dates
Set to Appear on A Prairie Home Companion Saturday, February 18

Fresh off a triumphant tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Jarosz has had a banner week, by anyone’s standards: on Saturday, she was featured on CBS This Morning: Saturday. The next day, she was a presenter at the 59th annual GRAMMY Premiere Ceremony, where she gave out a dozen awards before winning two of her own – for Best American Roots Performance (for “House of Mercy”) and Best Folk Album (for Undercurrent).

Yesterday, Undercurrent was honored yet again, when it was named Album of the Year at the International Folk Music Awards held in Kansas City, Missouri. The awards are presented by Folk Alliance International, a non-profit organization that produces an annual conference which is the world’s largest gathering of the folk music industry and community.

Folk Alliance International’s Executive Director Aengus Finnan remarked “Sarah represents the vitality of the modern folk era… reverence for tradition, and passion for the future.”

Jarosz said, “What a week it’s been! As if being over the moon about two GRAMMY wins wasn’t enough, I then received the news about winning Album of the Year at Folk Alliance! Thanks so much to everyone at FA for the support and to Aengus Finnan for his incredibly kind words. I’m so honored and thankful to everyone who made all of this possible.”

Here’s what some critics have said about Undercurrent:

“She refuses to dilute the raw sentiments with gloss or misdirection…direct, unadorned and thoroughly beautiful.” – Wall Street Journal

“On her fourth solo album Undercurrent, Sarah Jarosz doubles down on understated elegance.” –  Associated Press

“…a mix of old-time folk and contemporary bluegrass that digs deep into the soul and sends hearts soaring.” – Austin Chronicle

“The lyrics are sharp, even cruel; the guitars are low and steady; and Jarosz’s vocal carriage is uncharacteristically (and deliciously) unyielding.” – NPR Music

“There’s  a genuine yet subtle richness to each and every one of the selections, as well as a startling sense of insight.” – Consequence Of Sound

Sarah Jarosz is currently on tour supporting Undercurrent. This Saturday, February 18, she will be a featured member of the house band and a duet partner to Chris Thile on A Prairie Home Companion before she sets sail on the Cayamo Cruise, a week-long music festival featuring Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Richard Thompson, Buddy Miller, and others. Jarosz also has several dates opening for Ben Folds this spring in addition to upcoming headlining shows in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic and appearances at multiple music festivals including the Savannah Music Festival, Old Settler’s Music Festival, Merle Fest and Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
