The 2012 Guitar it Up for Girls Scholarship at Musicians Institute was awarded to current female guitar student Liangliang Lu. Ms. Lu is currently enrolled in the guitar program at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) at Musician’s Institute (MI) in Hollywood, CA.
The scholarship was sponsored by Guitar It Up for Girls and provided tuition assistance and a brand new Luna Guitar to a currently enrolled talented and high-achieving “female” student at MI. The owner of Guitar It Up for Girls, Tara Low, met with Beth Marlis, Vice President and Staff Instructor at Musicians Institute and the Executive Director of The Musicians Foundation to set up a scholarship through The Musicians Foundation. According to Tara, Guitar It Up for Girls wants to encourage and empower female guitarists to be all they can be in a male-dominated industry.
Liangliang Lu is from Qingdao Shi, Shandong, China and has seven years of experience playing guitar and performing live. She plays a variety of styles of music including pop, rock and blues. According to Ms. Lu when discussing attending MI, she said “MI is the best, and it will help me to become a true professional musician. I don’t have the extravagant hope to be a huge guitar hero or rock star. I want to be a working professional sideman, especially for singers.”
Not only did Ms. Lu receive tuition assistance through this scholarship, but she also received a brand new Luna Henna Paisley TLE Series Electric Guitar in black. This guitar has a mahogany body, maple fret board, Grover tuners, single coil pickups, as well as a gorgeous Henna inspired paisley pickguard that was designed by reknowned henna artist Alex Morgan of the UK.
We spoke with Beth and she said “Musicians Institute is proud to have Guitar it Up for Girls as an important scholarship partner for 2012. This year’s scholarship winner, Liangliang Lu, is an exceptional talent and we’re excited to support her trajectory as a professional guitarist, musician and role model for female players around the world. Thank you GIUFG for helping to make the dream of music education for talented young women a reality!”
“We are so excited about this scholarship and we wish Liangliang all the best in her career and hope that with this scholarship and the Luna electric guitar, she is that much closer to reaching her goals,” says Ms. Low.
