Los Angeles Afro-soul and R&B artist EMÜ, pronounced Emma, releases her new single, “Hurt Like This.” EMÜ is the musical project of Emma Ngula, who was born in Kenya and raised in the United States.
“I wanted ‘Hurt Like This’ to give a voice to quiet heartbreak,” EMÜ says, “the kind that happens when someone’s promises don’t match their actions.”
She adds, “Sometimes the deepest heartbreak isn’t being left. It’s realizing how much of yourself you gave away while hoping someone would choose you.”
Built on dreamy Afro-R&B production and Afrosoul warmth, the track blends personal storytelling with a modern African beat and creamy harmonics. “Hurt Like This” conjures up suggestions of the emotional weight of Tems and hints of the clean R&B feel associated with Elaine, while still making space for EMÜ’s own voice.
At its core, “Hurt Like This” is about the struggle between hope and self-awareness. EMÜ follows the inevitable breakdown of a romantic relationship that is essentially one-sided, ending with the painful truth that love can leave marks when it is not returned with the same care.
EMÜ’s music reflects both sides of her background. She brings together soulful writing, lush melodies, and emotional vulnerability, often exploring love, heartbreak, healing, identity, and belonging.
“Hurt Like This” was produced by Spromson. Recording, mixing, and mastering were handled by Rebecca Marti, and the artwork photography is credited to Maries Danila. A video for the single is in the works. It will add a visual layer to a release built on poignancy, pathos, and restraint.
“Hurt Like This” rolls out on a sheen of soft, creamy R&B surfaces, riding a gentle, syncopated rhythm. EMÜ’s exquisite voice imbues the lyrics with the poignant ache of love and longing, as she narrates her intense emotions. The distant echo of backing harmonies gives the tune a beautiful, misty radiance.
