Rising country artist Carter Faith on “Sinners In A Small Town”

Country artist Carter Faith signed an Artist Development deal with Altadena, the multi-faceted music company founded by late hitmaker busbee (Maren Morris, Carly Pearce, Keith Urban) last October. She released her debut single Leaving Tennessee” which was championed by Apple Music’s Hot Country playlist. Faith has also opened up for Cole Swindell, and shared the stage with RaeLynn, Jimmy Robbins, and Jordan Schmidt.

Faith released her sophomore single “Sinners In A Small Town” in October and filled us in on the backstory.

Can you tell us a little more about “Sinners In A Small Town” and the story behind the song?

Yes! “Sinners In A Small Town” is a really meaningful song to me. The lyrics aim to bring to light any wrongdoings, specifically in small towns but anywhere, that never receive justice. No matter who you are, you have seen or experienced a terrible situation that just never came to light, the song talks about those things that happen that people don’t or won’t talk about.

Do you have a favorite part of the song? Maybe a favorite lyric?

My favorite part of the song is the bridge! The lyrics are “mess up, go to church, hit your knees, repent, repeat” and I think these lyrics stick out to me because they are so universal and it really is just painting that picture of a cycle that everyone has seen or felt.

You co-wrote the track with Margaret Valentine and Jen Stegall, can you tell us about what that songwriting process looked like?

That day we just shared stories that we had experienced or heard about and had to write a therapeutic sort of song. I know we all feel lucky as songwriters to get to express our frustrations and feelings and we all wanted this song to mean something to whoever needed it.

How did you first get started in music? Was there a particular moment when you knew you wanted to be a country music artist?

I have always loved music and I really was just always drawn to country! I would play cassette tapes in my grandpa’s car, listen to country radio with my dad, and my mom would sing me church lullabies when I was a little girl. There is just something so familiar and at home to me about country, rootsy, honest music. I also always sang around the house and just fell into learning guitar and piano because I wanted to play songs by my favorite singers, I fell in love with it.

Who are some of your musical influences?

My top musical influences are for sure Kacey Musgraves, Erich Church, Fleetwood Mac, and of course Dolly Parton

What do you hope your fans/listeners take away with them when they listen to your music?

I really just want my listeners to take my music and make it their own. After releasing my first song I realized that my story might have inspired the song, but it is so special when I hear stories from my listeners about what it means to them. I think my main goal is for people to feel like my songs are their songs just as much as they are mine.

What’s next for you? Any more new music coming in the near future?!

I am writing and working on new music! I have no set plans but I am so excited to be working with a team who really believes in me and is letting me be myself musically.

What is your advice for young women who hope to work in the music industry?

I would say what I try to tell myself every day, “Stop comparing!” This is so simple but so, so true and important. If we want to make a difference then we can’t be like everyone else which means no one will take the same path and we will all have different versions of success. I want to learn to enjoy the ride and I would tell everyone else to focus on that too.
