Music Review: ‘Hot Sass’ by Liz Cooper

Hot Sass by alternative rocker Liz Cooper, which dropped today via Thirty Tigers, brings both a retroactive vibe and a contemporary feel through this energetic album with a touch of the blues and an overall feel of rebellion against musical norms. Cooper’s jazzy voice ranges from a vintage harmony reminiscent of a 1920’s singer to a strong punk melody with contrasting songs such as “Motorcycle” and the single “Hot Sass” that brings the listener into a journey of different genres.

Midway through Hot Sass, Liz Cooper and band delivers the groovy anthem “Getting Closer” with her definitive reflective voice that is soothing to the ears and a smooth rhythm section that evokes a summertime feel, perfect for lounging poolside or enjoying at a bonfire on the beach. Rounding out the album is the moody song “Smoke Break,” with more of a modern feel and a showcase of powerful instrumentals to evoke emotions that are tranquil and triumphant.

Cooper creates her own sound with Hot Sass, which can be compared to vintage icons such as Billie Holiday through the eras of ‘90s alternative Liz Phair and all the way to modern singer Lana Del Rey. However, with these comparisons, it’s very obvious Liz Cooper is a sound all her own and delivers dynamics with each track.

At moments folk and psychedelic rock with an exploration through grunge and punk, Hot Sass is an album that lives up to its name through pure attitude and originality. Liz Cooper demonstrates her icon status in the alternative scene a la Courtney Love and even jazz icons such as Etta James with her breathtaking voice and ability to switch through musical talents.

Hot Sass is a great album with gritty emotion and fun to sing along to whether you’re at home or in the car. This record is both humble and groundbreaking to put Liz Cooper in the much-deserved spotlight.
