Toronto-based alternative indie artist Delyn Grey released the single/music video for “Daddy’s Love” not long ago.
Delyn explains the song, “I want people to feel empowered to deflect other people’s defeatist projections with this one. I love this song, man. It’s gotten me through some serious mind-screws. It’s a relief. Don’t ever let anyone dictate what your relationship with your passion, loved ones, and yourself looks like. It’s not up to them and you must be pretty cool if people are trying to keep you from reaching your full potential, ha! Be fearless, be unapologetic, and maybe take the high road instead of calling out their daddy issues…? Keep doing you. I hope you find something for you in this track.”
Differentiated by her amalgamation of R&B and electronic elements with barbed rock flavors, Delyn’s sound and lyricism delve into darker topics, transcending the usual thrill of new love and emotional agony of heartache so common among most artists. In short, her sound is shaded by danger.
Expanding on the risky thrust of her sound, Delyn says, “I want to make music that’s fearless. I don’t want people to hear it and think I played it safe. My art wants purpose and I work hard to serve that. I work equally as hard to find purpose in my art.”
“Daddy’s Love” begins with raw, edgy guitars riding a rumbling, syncopated rhythm accented by a piano. When she sings out “drain me” on the chorus, the song assumes cutting savors laced with moody suggestive textures and torrid tones.
Dark and brooding, the rise and fall of the harmonics infuse the tune with visceral coloration and surging, latent surfaces, giving the music potent sonic allusions.
The video depicts Delyn bound to a chair by masked men who bloody her with their fists.
