Indie-folk singer-songwriter Diane Louvel recently released her new single, “Better Than You,” a track lifted from her forthcoming album, Above and Beyond.
“Better Than You” probes into the heart of choosing to remain in a toxic relationship where one is both architect and victim.
Louvel explains, “The lyrics are somewhat rational and analytical with spikes of ‘WTF am I thinking’ woven in.”
“But I’ll say yes to everything / ‘Cause I’ve got nothing better to do / And I make the same mistake I made before / Keeping one hand frozen on the door / I may be a fool but I’d rather be a jester / ‘Cause man, no one bums me out better than you.”
Louvel grew up in two hotbeds of fashion, music, and culture – New York City and Paris. Losing her brother resulted in a feeling of profound loneliness, followed by sensitive songs as well as purpose. Louvel’s sound echoes with organic authenticity, highlighted by a voice reminiscent of Joni Mitchell crossed with Ethel Cain.
Blending tangs of alt-country and folk-pop, “Better Than You” opens on a light, aching guitar, reflecting melancholic hues. Trembling with passion and wistful longing, Louvel’s evocative vocals imbue the lyrics with sad resignation colored by a regretful understanding of what she is doing.
At once visceral and affecting, the mood of the song is desolate, and isolated, as Louvel processes the weight and substance of the relationship. Yet in the chorus Louvel makes her presence felt, declaring her essential worth.
