Harley Grey & Sevi Perform the Title Song for the Film ‘Vespertine’

Vespertine, the film by Agent C and Lauri Levenfeld, relates a story of forgiveness, where lingering emotional damage produces a harvest of female retribution. The title – Vespertine – comes from the Latin vesper, which means “evening.”

The film’s logline reads: “An assault on a top female entertainment lawyer fast-tracks a reunion for four long-lost friends – a “die or awaken” offering from a poisonous desert flower turns daytime debauchery into a kaleidoscope tale of sisterhood where unresolved trauma seeds revenge that could only be female.”

Vespertine stars Harley Grey, Miya Chen, Brittany Ishibashi, and Rena Sofer. An actress, singer, and dancer, Grey is in high school and began dancing at age five. Later, she was selected to attend classes at San Francisco Ballet, Joffrey NYC, and RED in Los Angeles.

In 2021, Grey starred as the “witch” in a fashion short, ‘Goddess Rising Mystery School,’ shot in New York City. She has also performed in musical theater productions, including Ragtime, Fiddler on the Roof, Footloose, Into the Woods, Allwayz, Newsies, and Oliver.

Sevi, aka Sevilla Merritt, is a singer-songwriter in Los Angeles. She began acting in musical theater when she was five years old. She began playing violin when she was eight, followed by learning piano and guitar. During the pandemic, she discovered her talent for singing. Sevi has written and produced a number of songs, including “Oh Okay,” “Nobody Else,” and “Backup Friend.” She is a sophomore in high school.

“Vespertine” opens on a dark, chilling piano, followed by dreamy yet portentous voices of Grey and Sevi. Blending perfectly, their voices imbue the lyrics with uneasy sonic auras, at once revelatory and ominous, presaging foreboding events. Beautifully eerie, there’s an unrelenting and secretive essence to the melody.

“There is someone in the mirror / Looking back at me / Now I can’t even tell if it’s real / If it’s just a dream / I wonder if the truths inside of me / Hiding under all the misery.”

Akin to a shadowy, mysterious inner monologue, “Vespertine” reveals a gorgeously spine-chilling palette of haunting emotions.
