New Jersey-based folk-rock singer-songwriter Meg Whalen unveils her latest single, “The Break,” a song marinated in emotional gravity and memorable lyricism.
Written and recorded in the contemplation-inducing frosty months, “The Break” parades Whalen’s gift for classy, evocative melodies, alluring, powerful storytelling, and a voice that’s irresistibly inviting.
Frequently likened to Brandi Carlile and Phoebe Bridgers, Whalen explores leitmotifs of heartache, personal evolution, empowerment, and poised strength. Her sound, best described as folk-rock, embraces hints of alt-rock, funk, and indie-pop, while her nuanced voice infuses her songs with delicious tonal pigments.
Arriving on the scene in 2018, Whalen started out performing in local venues, followed by releasing a series of singles: “Soliloquy,” “Goodnight to Love,” “Talking in My Sleep,” and “Bleed.” Her live performances, at once absorbing and undeniably persuasive, have charmed audiences throughout the Northeastern U.S.
“The Break” opens on gentle, swirling tones flowing into a low-slung, gorgeously alluring melody that escalates to strong, shimmering guitars on the chorus. Whalen’s vocals, affluent and drenched in passion, imbue the lyrics with luscious, pensive colors that reveal imminent emotions.
At once beguilingly supple and evocative, there’s a wonderfully captivating quality to Whalen’s voice, authentically expressive, intimately vulnerable, and oh-so revealing. It’s one of those voices that reaches inside you and touches your heart.
Delivered with all-consuming fervency, “The Break” finds Meg Whalen coming into her own as a breathtaking singer-songwriter.
