Byrd on the Beat: Will The Third Try Be The Charm For Joan Jett?

Joan Jett is no stranger to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.  She has played that event twice.  The first time was in 2008, when she covered “Bits and Pieces,” a mid-1960’s tune done by one of that year’s inductees, Britain’s Dave Clark Five.  Joan then returned last April for her second appearance at these ceremonies, when she joined the surviving members of Nirvana, one of the inductees that night, for their 1991 classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

But when it comes to actually being inducted to the Rock Hall, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts have missed out twice, in 2012 and 2013.  In the case of the latter, of course, Heart was among those inducted.

While it’s debatable whether that saying about the third time being the charm actually rings true, Joan did earn her third nomination as the Hall, on October 9, revealed its list of nominees for the 2015 ceremony.  Fourteen other acts join Joan on this list, including Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Sting, and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Between now and December 9, you can vote online for Joan, or any of the other nominees, to get inducted during next spring’s ceremonies, just by going to:

The top 5 nominees chosen by the fans will constitute a single “fan ballot” that will be combined with the votes of an expert panel of artists, historians and music industry figures that numbers around 700, to determine which acts, ultimately, will earn their inductions.  And it is those inductions that will be revealed about a week after the fan voting closes, with the 2015 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies scheduled for April 18, 2015.

As sure as many newspapers recommend candidates for political office, so can GGM recommend Joan Jett to be one of the inducted.
