Leah Marie Mason has been keeping herself busy since the viral status she achieved with her debut single “Far Boy” on TikTok and she shows no signs of slowing down. The tear-jerking stories of love-gone-bad have become a staple of the Nashville-based artist’s music. Classic country fans as well as new ones will agree that Mason’s new single “I Wish” excels at capturing these feelings multidimensionally through her lyrical devices mixed with her vocal phrasing.
“I wish I was Cinderella, but the shoe just didn’t fit,” is Mason at her most pessimistic, and yet her hopefulness lies in her many wishes: for the shoe to fit, for stars to grant her deepest desires, and for what once was to exist again. Mason sets up a line or phrase that leaves us with an expectation but instead opts to utilize short answers or leaves space entirely, filled by the melody created by an acoustic guitar and fiddle that are reminiscent of an early Taylor Swift tune.
The band and production provide a soft, lush background that is just as ethereal as the name “I Wish” would cause one to imagine. Mason knows how to elevate the dreaminess by ditching all words in the song’s hook and sustaining vocables that carry us off our feet. Mason might just be at the beginning of her musical career but it’s evident that she not only knows what she wants but that she is also certain on how to get there, even if it requires wishing on stars.
