Executive Staff Brings Wealth of Experience to Hollywood’s College of Contemporary Music
In a recent press release, Musicians Institute (MI), the College of Contemporary Music in Hollywood, CA, has announced the appointment of several faculty members to new positions, enhancing the school’s Fall 2014 initiatives announced earlier this month. Bolstering their academic titles with active professional experience in the music industry, MI faculty members are helping to fully integrate MI’s Performance and Industry Studies divisions, providing students with an education that prepares them for a variety of careers. Full details are below regarding Dean of the School of Performance Studies, Rachel Yoon, Ph.D.; Vice President of Industry & Community Relations, Beth Marlis; and Chair of the Music Business Program, Stacy A. Turner.
Rachel Yoon, Ph.D. has been named Dean of the School of Performance Studies, overseeing MI’s Degree and Certificate Programs for Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals. An active performer, Dr. Yoon was also recently appointed Executive Music Director of top international media outlet Seoul Arirang, which is broadcasting a new Korean government-sponsored performance series from the renowned Seoul Namsan Concert Hall. Since receiving a Ph.D. in Composition from UCLA, Yoon has worked with jazz-fusion legends the Yellowjackets, R&B producer Wah-Wah Watson, and a variety of film composers; while performing as both arranger and keyboardist at premiere L.A. venues such as Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.
MI’s Vice President of Industry & Community Relations, Beth Marlis, has been appointed to the L.A. Area Council Advisory Board of Little Kids Rock, where she assists in music education for public schools in areas where music and art programs have been severely cut. Little Kids Rock reaches 300,000 K-12 students nationally, including 137 schools in the L.A. area alone. Marlis also serves as Senior Vice Chair of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, representing the interests of music education in Hollywood. A longtime presence at MI, Marlis graduated with honors from the Guitar Program before becoming an instructor in 1987. She was formerly the Vice President of Education and Department Head of MI’s Guitar Program.
Recently named Chair of the Music Business Program at MI, Stacy A. Turner is also an independent consultant providing management, representation, talent development and production coordination for R&B, Pop and Gospel producers, songwriters and artists. Among her clients have been Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter Rex Rideout as well as recording projects from Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, Kem, Will Downing and the Grammy-nominated Luther Vandross tribute CD Forever, For Always, For Luther. Turner previously held the position of Director of A&R for Quincy Jones’ label Qwest Records, where she worked with such artists as Jones himself, Tamia, Tevin Campbell, Patti Austin, Andraé Crouch and more.
